Beginner "point shooting" dryfire class...

Just saw this over at pistol training:



LA based course teaching new shooters 'combat point shooting' without actually shooting a real gun. "Dry fire", except no apparent attempt to learn how to use sights or trigger management.

BS...or valid training?

$40/class. Looks an hour long?

It seems goofy to me, since the folks aren't really learning how to run a gun - look at how some are holding their pistola ( support thumb behind slide! arg! ) - but is there any benefit to programming folks to take violent action? Or are these folks just fooling themselves? Is this just basically an aerobics class with blue guns?

It's training, so better than no training for new owners. It's only a $40 intro, and almost certainly the first training most of them have had. And point shooting is an important skill that a lot of us never practice.

I'm all for it.

Yes, poor grip technique too that the instructor also should have corrected.

I'm all for it.

The main reason most of us never practice it is because it doesn't work IRL. I regard it as I would The Black Plague, and I have lasers on all my social sidearms.

I've been shooting handguns like that for nigh on 40 year now and see no reason to change. It's called "cross-dominant", and it doesn't have anything to do with high heels and leather. It's a beach on aerial targets with shotguns, but other than that it's no cause for concern.

Real firearms training would be better, but anything is better than nothing. As a culture we need to stop the growing ignorant victim mentality and be smart, proactive, and aggressive when necessary.

Front sight did what the other schools missed... They focused on the average gun owner... They reached those who would never go to gunsight...


If people can be woken up, it is good training.

Once they live fire and realize they need training, hopefully the week out and get training

I shoot right handed and sight with left eye if I need to close one eye as I am cross dominant (right hand/left eye). Nothing wrong with it if it works. I shoot non-optic rifles/shotguns/lever actions left handed and rifles with optics right handed. Have done it for over 40 years

HA HA HA no! That's like learning to shadow box without knowing the fundamentals of boxing much less hitting a pad or getting hit. Unless you have some kind of physical feed back and understanding that there are physical dangers involved it's pointless. At least with the video shooting simulators the slide will move, but if you don't know a bad grip can cause many different problems from accuracy to failure in autoloaders then you might as well go play Time Crises 5.

I guess anything that gets someone one step in to the world of shooting is good, even if that step is a very tiny baby step.

Want to learn point shooting, great? See that paper target? Good. Point your pistol at it. Now gimmie $40 bucks.

That's about what they are doing.

Still requires exercising the handling of the gun.
Trigger control, loading mags, cleaning, cocking, racking, failure to extract and feed issues and picking up dropped stuff without pointing the gun at someone. Just developing confidence and coordination with a gun for some folks is a major project.

I can easily see the validity of a cheap class like this to get the new shooters thinking and practicing. Later they will want to try the sights and might get competitive.

Some folks that own guns shoot about once every 3 or 4 years if that.
