Hey guys, where do you get the rules regarding whether or not I can take a gun with me when we go camping in Yosemite ? Is it a national park w special rules?

If you do not have a valid CA LTC permit, then you need to transport the firearms unloaded and in a locked container.
Firearms must be kept in your vehicle or in your tent.
Outside of the vehicle, firearms must be transported directly to and from your tent.
It would only be legal to have a loaded firearm inside your tent.

If you do have a valid CA LTC permit, you can not carry inside any of the park's buildings with posted "no guns/weapons" signs.

A quote from this link shows that the current president signed the order allowing this:

As of February 22, 2010, a federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms in this park.
Jus so you know, the current president is Obama.

Technically legal, in effect, mostly illegal. I've seen folks get the third degree from the Rangers when they are informed firearms are in possession.

Unless you want to get your vehicle strip searched, waste 1/2 a day 'splainnin everything to suspicous Rangers and feeling like you live in Cuba, leave the guns at home, or visit the uncrowded and beautiful surrounding National Forrests and enjoy what's left of your 2nd admendment in California.

So, what is your point. Yes the law was changed on Obama's watch. It was an add on by the Republicans to a must approve bill. Obama is still the most anti gun President in the last 50 years.

Theh point is that after all the silliness about how he was going to come get the guns, in the end he just did a few things, and this was one. Lots of silliness for no reason. Y'all was took by the ones who have your money.

Obama did not willingly sign this legislation. He had little choice. Read these two articles for the full story:

                http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...021805124.html and http://www.nbcnews.com/id/30832809/n.../#.V5P0SVdCwyo

The Bush Administration had lifted the ban on concealed carry in the national parks, not Obama. A Federal judge blocked this move and the Obama administration did not appeal it.

That tells you that Obama wanted a ban on CC in the national parks.

Then Congress took action and attached a bill to allow CC in the national parks to a credit card company reform bill that Obama wanted on his desk ASAP. The measured passed with a veto proof majority in the House and was supported by over 100 democrats. (The vote tally in the Senate was not given.)

So, Obama had a choice, veto it and have a very good chance of having his veto overridden or sign it.

He had pushed hard for the credit card reform bill and made it clear to the democrats that he wanted it on his desk now. There was no chance of delaying the vote to remove the part of the bill allowing CC in national parks and meet Obama's deadline. He wanted to make a big statement that he was doing something to rein in the big, bad, credit card companies.

If he vetoed it, he would look bad for vetoing legislation he pushed hard to get and there was a very good chance his veto would be over-ridden. A significant number of democrats were also in favor of the gun bill.

Remember, this was post Heller. Obama did not want anything to head to SCOTUS to determine if the 2A applies outside the home. This would definitely not be something he wanted to be remembered for. The safe course was to allow state law to determine the rules for carrying within the national park that the park was located in. CCWs were not as prevalent then as now.

Having spent significant time in several National Parks and Monuments in Montana and Wyoming, I can tell you that the majority of NPS personnel still are against guns in the parks. The few times I OC because I was hiking in the backcountry in areas where grizzlies were known to be active and I felt OC allowed me to draw much faster because it was outside of my clothing and backpack straps, the park rangers I came across were not happy and tried to get me to put the gun in my pack because it scared the tourists from Japan and Europe.

I thought that was funny since I had a couple of Japanese tourists and German tourists want to take my picture because to them I looked like a cowboy with my gun and hat (an Australian Outback hat). They did not care that my gun was a G29 and not a 6 shooter.

So, Obama cannot take credit for this legislation, he did not want it but was forced to sign it to get what he wanted. Had he not signed it, it still would have likely passed when Congress over-rode his veto. This is something a president really does not want to invite, especially when he pushed so hard to get the original legislation fast tracked to his desk.

It is also telling that whenever he was asked about why he signed the legislation even though it contained the gun provision his response has always been no comment. If he really wanted to pretend he is not for a 100% gun ban he could have said this is a reasonable compromise in developing common sense gun laws. At least he could make it sound like he is willing to find some common ground with the 2A supporters.

As usual with politics, the truth is much more complicated. And remember Obama's biggest regret of his presidency, that he was not able to do more to restrict guns because he wants all of us to believe that criminals do follow the gun laws even though they break all the other laws.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

But he signed it. Facts is facts. Hype is hype. Pick up the one and reject the other.

I have a friend who is going on a 7 day guided hike through Yosemite. I told him to just leave it at home.

It's also illegal to carry bear spray in Yosemite. Can't protect yourself from anything..

Oh crap. An Obama fanboi on a gun forum wants to argue that Barry is pro-2A.

                        Makes me wanna hurl.

Really? Did HE ban the importation of all foreign "assault rifles"? No that was BUSH. Did HE end the manufacture and sale of ALL machine guns in the US? NO that was REAGAN. ACTUALLY, while I agree that he probably WANTED TO, Obama has done virtually NOTHING to actually impact firearms. If anything, he's been the best firearms salesman in history.

Based on your comments supporting Obama, it appears you are trying to provide support for Democrats by imputing Republicans. Do you support Hillary for President?
