Proving Residency to purchase a gun

What usually is and is not accepted to prove you're a resident of California?

I've had a couple of gun shops tell me that all they need is a California Drivers License with your current address on it, others said they need a lease agreement, utility bill, etc... However, they will not accept anything financial, like a bank statement (Anyone know why?).

DL and auto registration. As long as they're current and your address is correct on both, you should be GTG. Need your FSC or course.

Handguns need a 2nd proof of residency. Usually a something government issued or a house utility bill (gas, water, electric) not cable or cell phone. There is an official list somewhere and its probably because it's too easy to send your phone or bank bill to an address that is not yours

For rifles, a Valid CA DL or ID would be enough

Use search or read the regs. ca ID with photo utility bill, ccw, hard wired phone bill, notarized lease agreement, etc.

CA-DOJ has the instructions here: http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/dlrfaqs#13G

Buyers have found there may be some differences of opinion on that at the individual FFL level; one meets the FFL's expectations, or one does business elsewhere.

Any federally issued document with your name and address will do for 2nd proof of residencey, as well. I use my HAM radio license, of all things.

What I love is that you can't use passports. Cant buy a gun that legally secures my entry back into the Country..

Passports are proof of citizenship but not of residency. They do not list an address.

I know big boxes like Turners are more strict, I used my DL and had to get my car registration updated to my new address. Whereas I went to a smaller FFL and they were okay with my insurance card with my current address though I don't think that really counts.

My address is in mine... However I was told they do not use passports because you can move without updating.

That's interesting, I didn't know a HAM radio license would have your address on it.

I took a look at getting a HAM radio license but all the exams are 50+ miles away from me.

Do you know of any other federally issued documents which have a name and address on them?

You could apply for a C&R collector's license with the ATF.

Or you could just use your car registration.

Do you know how long that usually takes to process?

I'm still curious of what other documents can be used to prove residency, besides the standard utility bill, lease agreement, car registration, etc...

That's pretty much it in terms of proof. Anything else will probably not work.

The ATF thing will probably be 3 months tops, unless there's some rush on licenses going on.
