No need to lock up ammo, but some people are more comfortable doing so.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -
Ammo can be in the same box as the unloaded firearm or, not locked up at all and just scattered on the floorboards of your car/truck.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

A locked container, excluding the glove box or center console, without ammo inside is the standard. I keep handguns and ammo in separate locked containers because I drive an SUV. In a trunk, a legal locked container, I'd keep the handgun in another locked container separate from ammo.If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

Also note that when on school grounds (ie parking lot), ammo has to be locked up now.Comment

I have an SUV as well. I use one of these:
Foam only, ammo can is NOT included with order Holds two semi-auto pistols and four magazines Foam insert is (closed cell) military grade polyethylene which can be wiped clean Max length of pistols is 8 5/8" Compact design leaves no wasted space Manufactured in America Set includes 3 pieces. Soft lid foam, denser base foam with cutouts, dense flatpad for the bottom Gun cutout foam is included which allows you to customize the depth the gun sits (using a razor blade or knife). This provides you the flexibility of fitting anything from a compact to a full size 1911. Customer is responsible for gluing the lid foam in if desired. Standard hot glue will work. Fits in Ammo Cans with interior dimensions of 11.00" x 5.62" x 6.25"Comment

Like most laws, it's relatively easy for us to understand how the law applies to a generic situation. (That doesn't mean that some LEOs don't understand the laws and won't like what you're doing.) But as soon as you add 'but what if..' to the generic scenario, all bets are off.
Generic Scenario: Handguns in a generic car with a generic trunk. You can take a wheelbarrow full of unloaded handguns, a wheelbarrow full of loaded mags and a wheelbarrow full of ammo, dump them in your trunk, close the trunk and you're good to go. Meets the legal requirement of 'in a locked container'. The norm, of course, is having your unloaded handguns, some loaded mags and boxes of ammo in a range bag in the trunk. The other norm is everything in your range bag, a lock on the bag and toss the bag in the back seat.
Variations: Some people want to be 'extra legal' and lock their range bag and put it in the trunk. Some people want to be 'super duper legal' and have their guns in one locked bag and their ammo and empty mags in a separate locked bag. Do whatever makes you feel good.
What If #1: What if it's an SUV? Well the back of most SUVs is open to the passenger compartment so your range bag would have to be locked.
What If #2: What if it's a hatchback and the rear seats can be folded down from the inside? Who knows what any cop would think. If you're concerned about it lock your range bag.
What If #3,#4 ... #27: What if my SUV has a cover over the rear compartment and the cover can only be removed from the outside with the tailgate opened but my rear seats can be folded down from inside, but I have small explosives on the rear seat latches that I can detonate from the drivers seat which would give me instant access to my guns and ammo? Would that be Legal? Answer: STFU you're just trying to get someone to agree with some hairbrained plan to see how far you can push the limits.
Transporting legally is easy. See paragraphs 2 & 3. Transporting in a way that 'should' let you squeak by if you get lucky, really is something you have to decide for yourself.Comment
