Why would you think it would be Illegal? -

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).Comment

Per your original question, the ammo is perfectly legal. None of the public ranges I go to have any issues with it.
However, some ranges (and BLM land) may restrict its use. I know several Socal ranges do not allow it due to the fire risk.Last edited by bender152; 07-16-2016, 10:06 PM.Comment

I was zeroing in my new 20" FN 15 yesterday at Angeles and was stopped by one of the range guys. He told me that green tips were a big no no and they took my ammo to the front office and held it until I left. He was cool about it so I didn't fuss. Luckily I had some 55g reloads on me or my trip would have been cut short.Comment

xm855 wasn't ever illegal, tracers are illegal in CA. As far as when, it's been years. Currently PC 16460 (a)(1)
Seeing as how the thread is about xm855, odds are no one is discussing shotgun ammo. If you're thinking that you can use one of those adapters in a shotgun as a reason to have 5.56 tracers... CA DOJ is going to have a field day with you in court. You can read the rest of 18710 here http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/di...le=18710-18780 to read up on the felonies for possession, transportation, ignition, intent to injure or destroy property, yadda yadda.16460. (a) As used in Sections 16510, 16520, and 16780, and in
Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 18710) of Division 5 of Title 2,
"destructive device" includes any of the following weapons:
(1) Any projectile containing any explosive or incendiary material
or any other chemical substance, including, but not limited to, that
which is commonly known as tracer or incendiary ammunition, except
tracer ammunition manufactured for use in shotguns.
They're a very big no-no.Comment

Thank you for the info. I know tracers are a bad idea in California (drought, dry dead foliage everywhere, etc), but I did not know they were illegal. I may or may not have intended to buy mil surp M196 pills to reload myself, but now I will avoid tracers and squelch another idea of fun.xm855 wasn't ever illegal, tracers are illegal in CA. Every year at the Soldier of Fortune demo they would set the desert on fire. Thousands of tracers make that likely. They planned ahead by having a couple fire trucks ready to go.Comment
