    AR15 Lower Etching/Engraving?

So I have a AR15 lower that I want to have my buddy do an artwork on (so this rules out laser engraving services before anyone chimes in on that) is there any specific hand tool I can get for him to scratch/etch into the lower?

Will I be able to just use a metal pick and tell him to go at it, or will I need a rotary tool or a specific engraver tool in order to make it viable?

This is a factory made completed lower, this is for artwork only. I just don't want to do laser engraving. It has the standard anodized black that all lowers are. I do plan on to color his work with some of those Testors's enamel paint from the local arts/hobby store since they sell them in the small bottles. not a complete fill in, but more like highlighting some features to add depth to the sketching.

Is this something that is do-able or am i just in for a world of hassle and just making my lower ugly?

The markings must be .003" deep. I went this route:

You would need to remove the ano first though.

EDIT: if it's just art have at it, but if you're looking to put identifying markings on it then you gotta follow this.

      This will just be art.

I would go with the laser engraving route but my buddy does decent sketch drawings and I don't think laser machine can copy that.

I'm sure that will produce a first-class professional-looking result. I can't wait to see it!
        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

not sure if sarcastic or serious...?

I do plan on practicing and planning this out. not just willy-nilly working on my lower straight away.

If it is a 80% that you will sell. Yes it needs to be engraved per specs.

Is it a factory finished lower that you bought and it has the manufactures markings.

Engrave anyway you want. Just leave the factory marking alone.

A blank 80% to 100% that is just for you. Engrave whatever you want.
            till 2017.

              finished factory lower.

i just want to make it unique. and the artwork is going on the blank side of the lower (ie opposite side of all the manufacturer markings)
