    Steel targets

Anyone know where I can get some steel targets locally in the LA/OC area? I can find them online/out of state but shipping is going to be killer.

    Thanks

If you live near Los Angeles, check out Bobco. Always have good stuff, and their scrap heap doesn't suck either.
The maximum effective range of an excuse is zero meters.

If you're up north, Eureka boiler works has a ton of scrap 1/2" and some ridiculously thick stuff just hanging around a lot of times.

You're looking for AR400 or AR500 3/8" thick. That's armor plating that will stop everything short of .50 BMG at 100 yards and beyond. The tough part is cutting a hole to hang that stuff - the plates laugh at a drill bit. You'll need a plasma torch as far as I know.

I know that Escondido Metals has armor plate.

I ended up buying my plates from www.metaltargets.com and the targets have held up for years now. The stands didn't last but I've replaced them with rebar now.

Be careful when you shoot the steel targets. When I was going through the FBI SWAT school, we shot some steel targets in full auto for bail out exercise. At one stage, a bullet fragmented and a frag size of 22 bullet bounced back and hit the instructor's chest and penetrated. The instructor went to the emergency room and recovered.

In another incident, when I was an instructor, I taught recruits. One recruit shot at a steel plate at 25 yards. The bullet flattened and bounced back and hit the recruit's arm. Luckly, it hit flat, not on the edge side. The recruit got a BIG bruise. Shooting at a steel plate at close distance is dangerous.

Soft metals with large craters don't make safe targets you really need the AR400 to AR500 types of steel to fragment the bullet and not leave large pieces to come back.
Also fmj is not recommended. I find plated lead to work well.
Try http://www.gttargets.com/ they have a unique mount that is easy to make different height and replace when shot up. They ring very loud when hit. You get sound feed back instead of visually looking for a hole in paper.
Yep shipping is expensive but with a little care you will use these for years to come and the stands work great for regular paper targets as well, they don't blow over.

Try bowling pins. Head to your local bowling alley and ask them if they have any throwaways. Best to ask when they aren't busy.

Buy from Kurt at LV Steel Targets, he's a member here and he supports the shooting community. I have the little man spring loaded 17"x10" target and it is sweet, just need to give it a fresh coat of paint now and then...he will ship in flat rate box up to 70-lbs so you don't get killed by shipping.
