Question about muzzle compensators and noise.

Not trying to be rude, but I believe you're thinking to hard about this. Guns are loud, people at the range expect that. Get what best serves you and your needs, stop tailoring to others.

Tell that to our politicos. I like my rifle just fine with flash suppressor, pistol grip and standard mags and catch.

I had just as soon not bastardize my arm, if it was of my choosing.

Does it affect the brake's recoil reduction, when the cover is screwed in? Looks like it works like a linear comp. Oh, and is it heavy?

There is a little more recoil with the sleeve on.
It pretty much turns it into a linear like you suggest.

Without the sleeve, the brake is very light. When I am running competition, that is pretty nice.

With the sleeve on there, it is a little heavier (you can feel it), but not overly so.

The YHM package states Phantom Comp/Muzzle Brake (YMH-28-5M2). Includes a crush washer.

oh hey, you got the same brake i did, but i have the aggressive end (didn't know there was a smooth end before i bought mine)

i didn't know that this thing is much louder than stock a2 birdcage... that is gonna suck for shooters near me then...

I used the aluminum version on my 20". It's lightweight. Take the sleeve off and it's a standard 3 section brake. Put it on and the sound goes down. And there is that oil filter trick.

What is rude, is to put a loud MB on a soft-recoiling rifle just because it looks cool.

I have yet to use a brake on an AR, in an effort to be polite and considerate to my fellow shooters and I appreciate it when others do the same.

^^ I agree a MB that is only loud and offers no benefit would be rude. But I buy mine for function, in fact I think they look ugly, and they add extra length that I don't want.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the linear comps but I think I'll run with just the thread protector. That, I already have and I know the Yankee Hill brake fairly is loud.

My hearing is already more than half gone. Just as soon not inflict that situation on others around me. I've already needlessly spent too much trying to please the politicos in this state

Regarding a "thread protector", I assume one does not use a crush washer?

If not, will "plumbers Teflon" tape secure the proctor? I really dislike using Lock Tite, fingernail polish, etc. on arms.
