Our legislature feels the need to change our metallurgy, too. They wish all our firearms metal to be unobtanium.Comment

You're going to get that mechanism in a snubbie? And to people who say you can't get high velocity without recoil look up a diagram on how are recoilless rifle works.
it's really pretty interesting,
or at least I thought so.
all you have to figure out is how to direct an amount of gas pressure backwards as the bullet goes forward, which I admit isn't going to be easy from a pistol.
But that's just one way to do it.

There is a reason for most of the material choices we use right now. Good engineering reasons. Rifle cartridges work in the 60,000 psi range. We can work at higher pressures than that but would you buy a rifle that costs 5,000 dollars to build and uses rounds that are 30 dollars each due to the cost of materials and the difficulties in manufacturing?sigpicComment

A snub nosed 38 shooting a ss round at two thousand fps would exceed every pressure max out there. What happens when these rounds get fed into regular guns that were not built for them. Several lawsuits for missing fingers, hands, or eyes would put an end to that dream. There are plenty of uncomfortable guns to shoot out there already if that's what you want and they won't maim you. Not sure why you want the abuse but to each his own.Comment

We've been using relatively the same metals in gun barrels for decades. It seems like there would be something better out there. Especially for pistols, most snub nosed pistols provide very low velocities due to the short barrel.
I was thinking we should be shooting stainless steel bullets with fracture points for HD rounds.
Problem is that our barrel steel is too weak for that.
But imagine how cool it would be to have a snub nosed 38 obtain 2000Fps!
Guns would be a lot safer too.
Just thinking out loud. Anyone see any problems with this? Besides over penetration [emoji14]
BTW, I know the costs and tooling would be expensive. But having a powerful pocket carry 25 acp would be pretty cool!Last edited by SVT-40; 06-30-2016, 5:57 PM.Poke'm with a stick!

Make some titanium projectiles. Why go low tech with stainless steel?

They really should consider alternative metals so when the confiscated guns get melted down they can have more uses than just manhole covers.
