    Questions about gun transporting

I recently bought a rifle and have some questions about how to legally transport it in my car. First of all my house is within 1000 feet of 3 schools, so let's say my car is parked on my driveway, would I need to carry my rifle in a locked case while walking from my front door to my trunk, or could I just carry it in an unlocked rifle bag and then put it in my trunk? I assume an unlocked rifle bag would suffice if my car was in my garage or inside my house but want to make sure it would be okay in this situation. If it does need to be locked while carrying it, would putting a padlock between the zippers of a soft rifle bag suffice?
And let's say I drive to the range and my rifle was in the locked trunk. As soon as I take it out after parking would it need to be in a locked container or would the unlocked rifle bag suffice? Same question applies to handguns as I plan to buy one in the future as well. Thanks.

Within a GFSZ, a long gun must be in locked case/container. Hand gun must be in a locked container every time. At the range, its on private property again.

Case can be hard or soft. Dedicated firearm container or a tool bag, briefcase or piece of luggage.

Yes, one of those little 1" airline luggage locks that you can break with your hands laced through the zippers qualifies. Stupid "feel good" laws.

Depends on where the range is.

If you have to park in a lot and walk on public sidewalk to the range entrance, locked case for handgun, case for long gun. If, OTOH, the range is its own plot of land, and nobody but the range customers uses the parking lot, you would be at a place where guns may be used, though the range might reasonably discourage shooting in the parking lot.

But since you need the cases for 'in public', might just as well use them for the more restrictive type of range access. Simplifies choices.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
