They are legal to buy and if you use the search button there are threads that may help you. Once and a while in the for sale section of this thread someone will be selling body armor. Also what would you need it for? If you want more concealable armor for day to day then level 2 or level 3a is more effective. If you want heavier armor for a "crisis" or to deal with rifle rounds then level 3 or 4 should work with plates. I am unsure about dragon skin, heard something about the army rejecting it..."Legitimate use of violence can only be that which is required in self-defense." Ron Paul

Dragon skin seems to be the real deal. It was indeed rejected by the military, but that was likely political... I saw/read about the Fresno police dept getting ahold of some, and it stood up to all types of rifle and pistol rounds, even bursts from a MP5...hundreds of rounds total.Comment

dragonskin is good stuff. unfortunately the company is small and not alot of political pull on the hill. if you do a search you wil see lots of videos of DS being punished. and coming out on top.Dragon skin seems to be the real deal. Be ready to spend for it. Search my threads. I found a couple on ebay a while back and the price tag was about 3-5k or something like that.Calguns member formerly known as Long Beach

Dragon skin is heavy at almost 50 lbs. Add that to an Infantryman's basic load and you are talking about a lot of weight to carry around. Slowing you down can be deadly in and of itself.
The primary reason the Army rejected it was due to its repeated failures to stop penetration.

Don't expect to buy one at Quartermasters or Long Beach Uniform, they only sell it to LEO, those who posses a valid guard card, PI's, etc.. And they will call your employer to confirm.
As for the dragon skin, I believe that the Army didn't wan to spend the money. If it failed why was the company ordered by the government to keep the materials to make the vest classified. The vest have been tested and has passed.

I watched the full Congressional Review Panel Interview regarding the Dragon Skin armor. There was some serious bureaucratic BS going on in that room. Many flavors were seen by the committee. The most rememberable were as follows:
1: Soldiers brought in who were saved by the Interceptor body armor as testament to its superiority... a fact that was pointed out could not be claimed by DragonSkin...(Duhhh they made all their troops gt rid of it or lose their life insurance)
2: Official Gov documents which were dated approved.... before actually approved. (big booboo by DragonSkin)
3: Congressional Committee members calling the DragonSkin rep (CEO?) Anti-American when he questioned the motive of the persons who approved the Interceptor armor.
4: Calling the DragonSkin rep the most disgraceful and unprofessional person they had ever had before them.
I cannot say either body armor is better, as I have never had to use them... However the review was the biggest farce ever. I ate Popcorn.Co-Founder of the Contra Costa Contras shooting teamComment

the costa mesa fun show is coming up and there is usually a guy there with a pretty good selection of level 3 and 4 armor. they also have a variety of plate carriers and will custom make level 3 inserts to augment a plate carrier with level 4 plates.
From what i remember, level 4 plates (front and back) were ~600 and level 3 inserts (w/o carrier) were ~500.
good luck.Comment

The army passed a rule not allowing any body armour that wasn't issued.
Because they want to be sure of the soldier's safety, and not rely on shotty untested products. Or so they claim.Originally posted by nickAre there any times when you don't have a loaded firearm within reach?Originally posted by M. SageI support violence against communists.Comment
