        Very sad.

Why was live ammo being used in what sounds like just a room and not a range?

                That's what I was wondering.

Sad news but a pointed reminder to follow EVERY safety rule.

Just a guess, but I bet one of the students had loaded mags on his belt and grabbed the wrong mag during his malfunction drill.

I saw this happen a few years ago when I was at an outdoor range in Colorado. An instructor was teaching a CCW class with IIRC 10 or so students (too many IMHO but I understand the financial reasons why) where basically during the classroom portion of the program and during a draw from concealment exercise one of the students had grabbed a loaded instead of unloaded mag and during the "reload" drill went slide forward and triggered a round into the berm. Fortunately no one hurt, but certainly eye-opening.

People who resist common sense safety precautions are people you don't want to shoot with. Sounds like you were doing the right thing.

Not at all. The guy who died was apparently minding his own business in the next room when a round came though the wall and hit him in the neck.

Now, if the idiot who accidentally discharged the round had killed himself, that would have been Darwinian.

Negligent discharge, nothing accidental about it.
