    .38

1)I'm new to guns and am wondering how much would a .38 special revolver cost?

2)Any good ones for 300 and under?

    3)What should I look for?

I'll take it if you can find a barrel longer than 3" for that price

      1. You get what you pay for. If you want a nice Smith & Wesson it would cost more like $700+. Could do pretty well with a ruger in thr $500 range
      2. No, not really
      3. Do you want quality or cheap? $300 is a bit low for real quality

EDIT: Also, should decide if you want a single action only [old-school cowboy style] or a more modern double/single action. DA/SA typically costs more.

I have an Armscor .38 that I traded for that I think cost about $300 new. They are now sold under the Rock Island name. Been a good little gun, if I were picky I would say the trigger could use a little attention, but I think that way about a lot of guns.

Check out Charter Arms... Sturdy pistols with a decent reputation... Probably a little over 300.. Good luck...

I would suggest saving some money and spend more for a ruger lcr or lcrx-3. They test their revolvers with over pressure ammo and are well built. Alternatively a 357 mag to shoot 38 is ok too.

Just in case if someone accidently made a mistake while reloading, or mixed a 38 super round in your 38 spl bag. ;p

If you're open to buying a used revolver, you can certainly find a decent Smith and Wesson Model 10 for $300 or less.

I'd look for a revolver with a comfortable full sized grip, 6 shot cylinder, 4 inch barrel. The larger size will be easier to control, especially for a new shooter. Where are you located?

Ideally you would want to spend $500-ish on a Ruger GP100 .357 magnum.

Guns chambered for .357 magnum will also fire .38 special.

Most of the cheap revolvers are snubnose and/or lightweight. Not a good choice for your first one. If you are really stuck on the price point, I agree with the aforementioned choices. Armscor, Firestorm, Rock Island (3 different names for basically the same gun), Charter, or a S&W Model 10 IF you're lucky.

Here is a Rock Island for sale in Ventura: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1205450

$300.00 may be a bit low, but you may be able to find something used. I didn't give much more than that for my Model 64 Smith and Wesson, which is basically a Stainless Steel Model 10. As mentioned, you can safely shoot .38special in a .357 Magnum Revolver, so that opens up your possibilities.

                  For your consideration...

                  Ruger Security Six
                  Ruger SP101
Smith and Wesson Model 10 or Model 64

Finding one for $300 bucks on the used market may be a bit of a challenge however.

The Taurus Model 66 (K Frame Smith Copy) might be a consideration, they are in the low $400 dollar range new, and I believe they are Rostered in California. They are no Smith and Wesson or Ruger, but probably decent.

I previously owned a Taurus .38 Special and would not recommend it at all.

Armscor or Charter Arms long before Taurus. Ruger, Colt, or S&W are always the better choice.

I picked up a sw 642 about 5-6 years ago from buds guns for $365. If you want a ccw its hard to beat (in .38).
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

I would recommend staying away from Colt, as there are few qualified Gunsmiths capable of tuning them if need be. Don't get me wrong, I love them (I even have an old Official Police), but for a newbie, I would stick with Ruger or Smith. JMO of course.

That's on the low side for a quality revolver, even used

I view my guns as something that will outlive me. Settling for cheap no longer makes sense to me.

Look for a good used Smith and Wesson at a price that seems reasonable. But realistically $300 will not get you far on something worth shooting
