Having trouble finding a shop willing to do a PPT on a rifle

I live in San Francisco and I have a rifle for sale. I'm having trouble finding a FFL that is able or willing to do the transfer. I've called the 3 closest places to where I live and have been told that they don't have room to hold a rifle for a PPT. Is "lack of space" a justifiable excuse for an FFL to refuse a PPT?

I'm wondering if I just show up with the buyer, rather than call before, they might be more willing to do the PPT.

Any suggestions where I can get this done without having to drive too far? So far I've contacted Jackson Arms, Peninsula Guns, and City Guns.

Thanks in advance for any input/suggestions

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that entirely illegal? I believe they have to do the PPT.

I've had that problem. If there's no room I don't think you have any recourse. Especially with the rash of gun store break ins lately. It happened not too far from Sf and imbert and smithers quite recently in fact.

I got the same run around at Jackson. Try a Big 5. They didn't turn me away or give me any crap.

Go to the dealer(s) who are telling you no room in the safe and ask if you can buy a rifle from them. When they say yes, ask them where they're going to store it for the 10 days since there's "no room in the safe".

They are required by law to do PPT's. If there's room in the safe for a sale, then there's room for a PPT. Not that I'd do any business with them after calling them out. I'm just for calling them on it and then outing them so that the rest of us know who NOT to do business with.

Brian Nussbaum in Burlingame is pretty good with knowing what he's "supposed to do" as a dealer. I've done a few PPTs there with him.

Didn't even thing about Big 5 - they are corporate and would "play by the book". Also thanks for the info about Brian Nussbaum in Burlingame - never heard of that shop but will be sure to check it out

Lack of space is becoming a common excuse I'd like to see a DOJ opinion on it.

Don't ask for something when you might not like the answer. If the CA DOJ saw this as another tool to limit gun sales I'm sure they would jump right on it... and not in a manner which would be acceptable to us law abiding citizens.

Just to follow up - I sold my rifle today and just showed up to do the PPT at Jackson Arms. Doing the transfer was hassle free, they let my buyer do the inspection inside the store, and I was out of there in about 20 minutes.
