The first question I would ask myself. Was the guy a gun veteran.

If he were... I can't see him "accidentally" shooting himself. Maybe it was a suicide that was staged so relatives could get insurance money... because who cleans their gun in a car.
The dude was 80, you forget little things when you are 80. I saw the aftermath when a older gentleman at Metcalf fired a rifle he had forgotten to take the cleaning rod out of.

I pray for the deceased's family. But I have to say. To go doing what you loved is not a bad way....

Todays local paper said the firearm was a pistol.. 45 caliber.. didn't say if it was a single action 45LC or a 1911

oh man, this is shocking news. i usually shoot at chabot on fridays or mondays to avoid the crowds and to be around the perceived safer old timers. this is a darn shame
it's a trick. get an axe.

Because you can't have a shooting (self-inflicted or not) without a fatality?

I saw this in the paper today... it's sad news, and my favorite range. Hopefully nobody I've seen in my trips to Chabot.

For the record: I usually see either Sheriffs or OPD (very occasionally) on Redwood Road when I'm trying to wear the Miata's tires out. Or EBRPD...

Chabot's SKS 2 round rule is due to several SKS's being shot up there at various times having bad sears right out of the box NOT!!! from someone shooting themselves.........

So they insist on two rounds only in an SKS, period? As an SKS owner who's actually CHECKED his firing pin and followed the full clean-it-up-to-make-sure-it-won't-stick procedure, that annoys me quite a bit. I could see requiring two rounds only for the first mag, to show the RSO your gun's proper, but geez - some of us actually practice proper maintenance!

Yeah, I kind of felt like an idiot when the range officer walked by and my dad brought out the bag of stripper clips and I had to tell him, "We don't need those" and fire a look at the RO.
