Traveling through Canada to Alaska with ammo

Anyone have any insight on traveling through Canada to Alaska with ammo only, no firearms? Son is moving there and hasn't been able to get a consistent answer on ammo quantities he can travel with through Canada while transporting to Alaska... He will be shipping firearms via FFL from Montana before leaving the USA.

        Mounted Police

Here is the Mounted Police Web site. I would call them directly.

You can't ship ammo direct to AK. It has to go to WA state and then go by freight forwarder (truck) to AK, since its ORM-D and has to be ground shipped. Hence OPs question about trucking it and saving the forwarding costs.

Watch Canadian border patrol show on YouTube
They let people in with ammo as long as you don't have any illegal weapons

Why not buy in Alaska? Pet loads?

I thought USPS would not allow ammo to be shipped?

I've traveled through Canada with my rifles and as far as I can remember the ammo limit is 5000 rounds.

You need to declare it upon entry and you cannot have any hollowpoint, incendiary, steel core or anything else they consider scary.

                    Details here
What you need to know when crossing the Canadian border with firearms, weapons or related parts and accessories.

If you have more questions give the Canada border services agency a call, they are disturbingly friendly.

If it's enough that you need to move more than a couple boxes, you don't want to go through Canada. Drive to Bellingham, Washington and take a ferry direct to Alaska.

Canada isn't like the US. They'll toss your vehicle if they feel like it, and a couple thousand rounds of ammo, or two rounds of the wrong kind, you're going to wind up in legal hell. You're limited to 5,000 rounds with no HP, tracer, incendiary, etc.

The Canada border isn't like ours. They'll turn people away for DUI convictions. They'll search your car if they feel like it. They don't just let everybody in with all the stuff they have.
