How long does it take the DOJ (to acknowledge paperwork)???

Hey folks, I recently filed the Firearms Ownership Record with the CA DOJ and paid the $19 to transfer a 38 Special revolver to my daughter. It's been over a month now since I sent it and since the DOJ cashed my check for the transfer. But I haven't heard anything back from them.

So, does anyone out there have any experience with how long the DOJ usually takes to complete a Intra-Family transfer and mail the confirmation? There's no info on the DOJ website on timeframes for processing.

Please let me know.

I sent one in on January 2nd, two weeks ago I got something in the mail from them. Over 4 months and it wasn't what I thought it was. It said please return with a check. There was a hole ripped on the top left corner of my form. The spot where I STAPLED THE CHECK.

Weeks to months.

If they cashed your check, they got the form; you have done what CA law requires. You do not need the acknowledgement for any legal reason - enjoy your new (to you) gun(s).

About what I expected of the CA DOJ.

Thanks folks. Sounds like others have had similar lackluster performance from the CA DOJ like I'm experiencing.

I did keep an electronic copy of the canceled check that the DOJ cashed, along with copies of the paperwork I sent in.

The DOJ has never responded to any of my email inquiries, ever! So, I'll just have to wait until they get around to it. Funny how they have so many timeframes and deadlines for gun-owners to adhere to for registering and reporting, but aren't much interested in serving the public in a conscientious or prompt manner.

Wish they'd do one of those Little Hoover Commission Reports on the DOJ, like they've done on other CA agencies. To bring these poor performance issues and (likely) violations to light.

If you fax the DOJ your question, they will reply in a day. They are old school government. They live off faxes.

maybe they got confused when you sent in a form about a gun you already own. and the Firearms Ownership Record form is not the correct form in any case.

your daughter is the one that needs to file the Op-Law/Intrafamily registration form.

Good point, has anyone also thought it was weird that the person transferring doesn't need to sign anything?

Ca-DOJ,BOF is a Commyfornia state agency. They move at the speed of government employees. Which is comparable to the average speed of a glacier.

The only time they moved quickly and or efficiently is at Lunch-Break-Quitting time.

I dropped a couple of guns from my RAW list. I guess it's been about 20 years, no word yet?

Guess that wasn't clear in my post. The form was filled out to effect a transfer to my daughter, and my daughter's info and signature went on the form. This was the form that the DOJ's Firearm Safety Certificate instruction manual specifically said to use; Firearm Ownership Record BOF 4542A. See FSC manual page 40, bottom of first paragraph.

Probably not the first time a State agency gave out conflicting info to the public.

And, YES, I agree that it is weird that only the recipient or transferee needs to sign the form, and not the transferor.

copy of my RAW.

Maybe you can post a link because the online FSC manual only has 36 pages. The OpLaw-Intrafamily form is the one I've used, actually my son used when I gave him one of my guns for his birthday.
