    AR Pistol Information

Is there a sticky somewhere that I can't find that talks about the legalities and/or the process of creating and owning AR Postols both with factory built and 80% lowers? I can't seem to find one.

An AR style pistol can still be legally made in CA.

It needs to be made using an "80% receiver" or a receiver that was DROS'd as a handgun.
If a receiver that was DROS'd as a long gun is used, the firearm would be considered a SBR and not a handgun.

    The handgun will need:
    1. Minimum barrel length of 6".
    2. Minimum overall length of 10.5".
    3. To operate as a bolt-action single-shot pistol or as a break-top/open single-shot pistol.

Question about the bolt action style function...

I read about purchasing a sled to block the magwell and removing the gas system. I also read that after you do this, you can legally convert it back to a semi-auto pistol and use 10 round mags.

        1. What is the point of blocking the magwell and the gas block if it is an 80% lower and the gun will never be seen by anyone for "registration"
        2. If you are required to block the magwell and remove the gas block, and nobody sees it or you don't register it, what is to keep someone from just saying "Oh ya...I did that when I built it and converted it after?" Should I take pictures? Video?
        3. At what point can I remove the sled and reinstall the gas tube?
        4. What changed over the years (after 2012, or whatever year there was a law that changed), and how did it effect constructing a legal pistol from an 80%?

        Thanks.

To be compliant with CA Law.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. Keep in mind the burden of proof is on the state. You should also keep in mind that a jury of your peers is likely to be rabidly ignorant of "gun stuff" and may have an average IQ of 50

That is a question that has been debated at length in these same forums. Some maintain that by doing so you have "manufactured" an unsafe handgun (according to the roster). What level of risk are you willing to assume.

            4. What changed over the years (after 2012, or whatever year there was a law that changed), and how did it effect constructing a legal pistol from an 80%?

            Thanks.
The most recent has already been mentioned as of 1/1/2015:

            1) Could not have previously been manufactured as a semi-auto handgun.
            2) Dimensionally compliant and break-top or bolt action. (satisfied by single shot sled and no gas tube).
