Colt King Cobra 6" Value Question...

Long story short... I have a 6" Colt King Cobra (Gun only, no tupperware) and I am contemplating selling it so I can put a quality optic on my new creedmoor build... I know this gun isn't quite Python status, but maybe it's close. I only shot it a time or two. It's 95% probably in finish.

What do you think the ballpark value of said gun is? Gunbroker can be hard to figure out because you may not know if there is a reserve price or other things that would make the purchase price different from the list price.

I have never sold a gun before, it was always my policy to never sell something to buy something, but I dunno. I really want my optic!

Then again, am I stupid for considering this?!

Blued Colt King Cobras fetch more than stainless.

Guns with boxes fetch more than those without.

Yours looks polished like it could be a "Ultimate" Bright Stainless; do you know if it is? That might cause it to see a boost in the asking price.

Your photos aren't really good enough to determine much else. They are way too blurry even to see if there is a turn-ring on the cylinder.

If you check Gunbroker, if logged in under "Advanced" search options you can search ONLY completed auctions. Ignore those that did not end with an actual sale and you should be able to get an idea.

Add about another $500 over that average due to CA's limitations due to the Roster (sorry folks, it's just a truth and fact of life) and you are within a good asking range.

Thanks... I do know it was a matte stainless but the previous owner gave it a bright Polish as there was some small scratches and incidental Knicks...

Polishing it out will hurt the value a little bit, especially if it was overdone around rollmarks. It's easy to polish out matte-stainless, and you can get the look back with some very fine (that's VERY fine) steel wool, but it won't look exactly as it came from the factory.

As to boxes purchased online to match, knowing such boxes go from $50 to $125 depending on condition and what's included, and that it won't be the box with matching serial number stickers, it's a nice perk but in disclosing it's not the original box (as you should in being honest) it will only add about the value of what you will have paid for the box in difference. I wouldn't waste my time with that; I would just sell it as is.

^^^This. In spades.

Short of standard cleaning to remove powder residue and maybe some Mother's Mag Polish on the front of the cylinder if there are carbon stains, I'd leave well enough alone and just sell it as is. Very few people want a non-matching box enough to pay extra for it.

That's a bright stainless KC, it came that way from Colt. Five years ago I sold my 4" bright SS KC, well used but like yours 90-95%. While it was shoot a fair amount it was rarely holstered. I sold mine, gun only box and paperwork long gone, for $800. Bought it new in box in 1990 for $420 out the door.
In today's market here in CA, I would not be surprised if it sold for $1500 or more. While a four inch would sell better, you still will have no problems selling the six.
The Colt wheel guns are in huge demand, I sold mine because I liked my S&W 686-4 a lot more.

Apparently it's not. I already addressed this above and the O/P says it was the more common matte-stainless that the original owner polished out.

I have a hard time believing that, the bright SS KC is the most commen. Matter of fact I have never seen a matte SS KC. Just the bright and the rare blue.
Maybe there were matte KC's but they were not commen, while in the early 90's the brights were everywhere. I'd be more inclined to believe it's a bright with Knicks and scratches, that someone tried to buff out.

There have been at least four matte stainless King Cobras for sale here on Calguns in the past few years. I see more of the matte-stainless guns than any other, and I often pass on them. 2 others were up for auction recently by LSB since January; I passed on those too.

They were the most common. Blue Book/gun guides say the same.

Matte Stainless: 357 Mag. cal., stainless steel construction, black neoprene round butt grips, 2 (mfg. 1988-94), 4, 6, or 8 (mfg. 1990-94) in. solid rib barrel, white outline rear sight, approx. 36 oz. (2 1/2 in. barrel). Mfg. late 1986-92, production resumed 1994, disc. 1998.

Awesome... I found the original box! After googling what the box looks like, I vaguely remember years ago seeing the box at my grandfathers house. I sent him a picture of it and he still has it!
