West German original grips vs g10

Recently aquired a west German 226 that came with hogue rubber grips. I'm not a fan of the grips and was wondering if I should track down some oem west German grips or just buy some checkered g10. Anyone input from people with experience would be appreciated. Btw, I'm not purchasing the oem based on originality. While that is a plus, I'm more curious about feel/ function. Thanks

I have a W. German 226 that had the original grips that I changed to Pachmyre but went back. They feel good. They're not too tacky but felt good in my hand. Then I had the gun cerakoted and put Tacops grips on there and man they feel awesome! I have G10's on my X5 as well as my Stainless Elites and Enhanced Elites but really in those cases I was going more for a certain look than a feel.

I just wished someone had a G10 store so we could actually see and feel every grip to really know before we put 100.00 into the gun.

Not P226 but my P220 came with Hogue grips. Didn't like the way it felt so I replaced it with rosewood gips.
My hands are medium size so the the stock P226 grips (polymer) are perfect and so are the rosewood grips on P220.

original OEM black plastic checkered grips are gtg. for my liking, Sig got it right with the grips. although examples are not always readily available, the obsolete original OEM grips can be found on the online auction circuit via ebay/Gunbroker.
there are reproduction grips that have been circulating for years. reproduction grips appear identical to original OEM grips and a seller may not even know that he is selling reproduction grips. original grips will have 2 numbers that are side-by-side and located on the inside grip panels. the 2 numbers indicate the year of manufacture for the grip and both grips will have numbers. the reproduction grips will have what appears to be 2 numbers on the inside grip panel, but the numbers will not be legible.
so, if one would wish to purchase original OEM grips via an online auction it would be prudent to ask the seller to id the 2 numbers of each grip for you prior to bidding/purchasing.

Got Hogue Extreme G-10 with built in magwell on my 226. Two thumbs up for purchase, one thumb down for fitment. Back lip of magwell does not fit flush with frame of pistol. Tried to resolve with Hogue but rep basically said it is what it is. I have other G-10 grips with magwell fit correctly.

Would I buy them again, hell yell. Extra real estate gives large hands something to grab onto.

If your worried about changing W. German pistol too much and are going to keep it in the safe, go original. If it is going to be your shooter, buy the grips definitely worth the ducks.

I've heard of this being an issue for some people. Have u tried shifting the grips around a little before tightening down the screws? There's a little bit of wiggle room there

Yes, grips are adjusted as far forward as possible. I had similar issue with 227 but those magwell grips had slight adjustment and gap closed completely. Space between back of frame and magwell grip bevel on 226 is off by a couple of millimeters. Mag makes contact with frame on way into pistol. Taking pistol with grips to Frontsight in July, will see if spacing makes a difference or not.
