Need help with mg42 project

Hey everyone, so I have a little project I'm doing. I ordered the parts kit and messed around with it for a little bit. For some reason the top cover wont fit on the 308 feed tray...anyone know why?

A 308 cover on a 8mm feed tray? WAG cause I know nothing about them.

AFAIK...

MG42 = 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser)
MG3 = 7.62x51mm

The 8mm Mauser has an longer overall length than the .308 and this can cause parts compatibility issues with firearms (MG42/MG3) chambered in these cartridges.

The Rheinmetall MG3 and Beretta MG-42/59 uses a different feed mechanism than the MG42 due to the cartridge length differences.

Will that work with the original mg42 drum? I forgot to mention that.
