The next generation of gun rights supporters..

Trying to raise them right. I'm sad for the generations of feckless, worthless, and spineless people I see being raised today. Kids that don't have a clue about freedom, rights or anything else beyond the next big app or TV personality.

My son decided he wanted to try out the MP5 clone.. He did great and noted how the recoil felt a lot different. On the drive out we talked about govt and how far from the Constitution we've moved. We also discussed what freedom really is and how govt is more about control of people than helping people.

It was a good day of shooting..

    Looking all operator.. lol

Oh, what's a good way to help someone fix "limp wristing".. my son was getting a lot of failures and I'm sure this is what he's doing. We worked on his grip, but I think he is not firming his wrist when he shoots.

He tried to blame the gun/ammo, but I would blast through a mag with no issues, so the gun is fine. Is there a technique to help fix this with kids?

That's awesome! Seen a regular at pala yesterday with his kid in tow, kid had gun belt, mags, whole 9 yards with a 1911/22. I was impressed.

Anyway, look at your kid's stance. He's leaning back. Yes, I know he's young and the gun may be heavy for now, but that's part of the issue. I'd bet he's getting thrown around by it. His strong arm also isn't anywhere near lock-out. Combined with just being small, he likely doesn't have the grip strength yet.

          Good job OP!

One of the best things you can instill in him is being honest and an objective/rational person. When someone is honest and objective they can easily see through the BS.

Yea, been trying to fix the "lean back".. which then makes him lean too far forward.. lol..

It's a 1911/22.. so it's not heavy.. but he thinks he has to brace like that. I'm happy I broke his habit of tea-cupping the pistol.. the rest is a work in process.

Isn't that usually how a person counterbalance when it's heavy in the front?

              Good job Dad!

The limp wristing is the next item on my to-fix list..

I've found it hard to teach kids how to shoot centerfire semi-auto pistols without limp wristing. It actually may not be lack of strength and limp wristing. I suspect it also has to do with their lack of forearm/wrist/hand mass. They just don't have enough meat on them yet for the recoil to work against.

I've found they do much better with dedicated 22 pistols like Ruger MkII or III, Buckmarks, P22's and the like. Maybe the downsized Browning 1911-22 would work better.

I'm assuming your 1911 has a conversion on it. How many rounds do you have down it? Maybe it just needs to be well broken-in first.

                    It's a dedicated .22 .. a Sig 22/1911.. same as a GSG.

I would suggest trying a Walther P22. It's a very small gun and the grip is perfect for kids hands. They can really get a good grip around it. A 1911 grip is HUGE in comparison.

The P22's slide is also very small and light, so .22 LR's cycle it much faster and easier than the bigger and heavier 1911 slide.

Also, make sure to use CCI ammo (like Mini-Mags). CCI seems to cycle better than most. They also have good power.

I love taking young shooters out & getting them squared away. At that age I wouldn't sweat the details too much. I would just emphasize fun, safety & the 4 Golden rules. Everything else will come with time and patience.

Pic with my son & his cousins a few years ago....
