long-term storage long gun cleaning question

I've searched this (and other) forums and haven't been able to find a good answer.

I have a shotgun stored on top of closed-cell foam in a pelican case in a dry location. It looks like a little spot of rust has developed on the end of the barrel right where the choke is located. The question is: do I need to wire brush off the little spot of rust now, for fear it will get worse? Or can I be fine if I just make sure the little rusty spot has some oil on it, and leave it?

Rust won't be able to keep developing without additional moisture, correct?

Anyone have suggestions for long term storage of a shotgun? Are silicon-impregnated socks worthwhile?

you need to stop the rust, rust always will grow if left alone, all you can do is slow down the rust once started. Some oil on a fine brush (I use a old toothbrush) and remove as much as possible, then a good coat of wax (or oil, lots of people prefer oil) but I prefer wax.

Then borestores or gun socks (impregnated with silicon, not your old socks) will keep that gun looking new.

0000 steel wool, then Renaissance wax and Bore Stores. And/or if you going to store the gun in the case, remove the foam and stuff it somewhere.

Edit: Even better would be to find some type of cabinet or foot locker or something. Drill a small hole and run a golden rod in there (seal the whole once you run the cable). Then toss in a desiccant canister.

Thanks everyone. Exactly what I needed to know. I'll get some dessicant packs and throw 'em in there too for good measure.

Remove it from the foam case. That is a recipe for rust. The case traps moisture. The moisture then condensates on the colder metal of the firearm..

Do get a silicon sock, but it's where the shotgun is stored which will be the determiner of future rust.

Do you have a safe? if so get a dry-rod or similar device... Don't just keep it in the closet on the floor. It will rust for sure.

I have used Poly Bags for some firearms stored for 10+ years and no problems. They are designed for long term storage.

Eezox and then wrap in VCI paper. You should have no problems whatsoever.

I used a toothbrush and yeah, tooth paste lightly. Then oil. After cleaning, a light coat of oil and into a Silicon Gun sock. Good for a long time and keeps,safe rash
To a minimum.
