    Training Class

I was thinking of getting some basic shooting and there is an instructor at the range that charge $65 for a single private lesson per hour and $90 for a couple. Would you recommend this route or just start with a group lesson first?

I would think that a group lesson would probably be best. I've done a few of those and they were very beneficial.

It depends on your level... If you have never shot before, then having an individual is a good thing if the instructor is a good communicator.

If you share your general location, we might be able to point you towards some schools

Is this for Skeet, Trap, Handguns? Etc?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I have taken time to familiarized with shooting the handgun for about a year now. I am able to place shots on 8x11 at 7 and 15 feet. Not to say that they are good, they are usually about 4" left and 4" low depending on the gun but it can also be all over the page. I am near temecula/Murieta or it can be in LA if need be.

I have taken a few classes at firearms training associates and never had a problem. Heard some people say some instructors have an attitude, but not my exp. they are in Corona which is not too far. Classes will always give you something to take away and fun. Just have to keep an open mind...

I think I am going to to stay basic for the time being.

For your stated skill level, I'd highly recommend 1:1 instruction.

In a couple of hours with a good teacher, you should be able to place shots into 2" at 5 yards (15') and all your shots should be touching at 3 yards.

The hardest habit to break will be how you are jerking the trigger

$90 for a couple hours doesn't seem outrageous to me. And it's cheap enough that I didn't get much out of the lesson I wouldn't care. I say go for it if you think the guy is good. Do you know anything about his background?

And I'd also talk to him up front about your 4" low and 4" left as that would be one of the main things I would be wanting to correct. So ask him if he thinks he can help diagnose and solve that as well as tightening up your groups in general.

In a private session, your instructor will have more flexibility in how he paces the class and what material he can cover. I definitely recommend it if there are no issues that would prevent you from taking such a class.

Thanks all for the advise. I talked to him a little bit and found that he had been an FBI agent and taught shooting there as well. He seems pretty cool but probably reserved real comment for the class (appropriate enough). And I mentioned about my shooting skill and he probably saw the result. He worked at the range and instruct on the off day. As for bad habit, I doubt that I would be able to correct it in couple hours LOL. But I started to notice where I place my shot when I jerk which I couldn't before. So I definitely know those wild shots when I made it but couldn't figure out the low and left problem. I guess that is something.
