    Shooting Steel Core Ammo

Hi, first post so sorry if i screw up
i just recently got into shooting and picked up way too much steel core,
first off when i did shoot it, it didn't feed too well in my su-16,
also i need a legal place to shoot it near where i am, im in the san fernando valley,
i heard you can shoot it out in the desserts somewhere? that'd be fine but i would like to find the proper documentation saying i could do that if its legal
any advice at all would help, thanks
a range that take steel core thats cheap would be okay too, thanks!

Unfortunately, almost none of the outdoor ranges in SoCal are going to allow you to use ammo with any steel content due to the potential for starting a fire. I understand that Burro Canyon will allow this during the wet season but I would call them to verify. You could just go to the desert where there are no restrictions.

There are some indoor ranges that will allow you to shoot rifles and have no restrictions on projectile steel content. One example is Shooter's Paradise in Oxnard.

    Oh....and welcome to CalGuns!

Lancaster, Palmdale, Ridgecrest - well away from any development and with a good backstop.

It doesn't have to be defined as "desert." Desert or not is irrelevant. You are looking for public lands in unincorporated areas of counties that allow shooting. In southern California, these areas are usually deserts. There are plenty of areas to shoot on BLM land out toward Barstow.

ohhh alright i think i understand
so palmdale seems the closest around, so what i do is find an area a bit away from the modernized area of palmdale and just shoot there once i find a proper backstop and can just shoot cans out there until whenever i please?

Pretty much, as long as you pick up your cans, brass and other trash when you're done. We've been having a major problem developing over the years with historical shooting areas being closed off to us due to trash and general disrespect of the areas. We all need to take responsibility for our garbage if we we're going to be able to keep using these areas.

Make sure you're away from roads as well, especially with that steel core, it's more prone to ricochets.

sounds good, i pick up my brass anyway, and yeah trash should be picked up just as general courtesy, i do it at the range, same would apply elsewhere

Steel core hitting rocks can make sparks. Bring with you equipment to help you put out a fire.

Steel is only relevant in the projectile. The projectile may have a steel core or some steel in the metal jacket over a lead core.

Get off the 14 at Rosamond Blvd, turn left to go over the bridge & take the first right. The road follows the 14 for a way & then make a left to the old quarry. You'l know when you found the right place, it looks like Beirut on a bad day (easy to spot on Google earth)

Nope, but it's hard to miss. It's littered with cars & appliances all shot to hell & the ground is carpeted in brass. Just follow the noise of gunfire..
