Smart guns solve a problem that doesn't really exist for the most part. I think the only gun-carrying population for which smart guns make any sense at all are police, and of course they will be the last people to adopt any such technology.
Because we have a Republican Congress, and I am often told Republicans support gun rights, even though they somehow manage to do so without passing new pro-rights legislation, in a way I have never understood, but which seems to make a lot of sense to their supporters here and at large, it would be cool if some Republicans in Congress introduced a bill that encouraged research into smart gun technology, while at the same time prohibiting states from imposing smart gun requirements on their citizens.
Then we could all talk intelligently about smart guns without getting all emotional and defensive about it.
Sadly, for reasons that also escape my understanding, but which could maybe be explained by more politically aware people than me, we will never see such reasonable, intelligent pro-rights legislation emanate from our Republican Congress.
