Kit AK/AR Registration Question

Hey guys,

When it comes to AK-47 or AR-15s built from parts kit to compliance, which part is registered and how? Is it the lower? Does it have to have a serial number? What if it doesn't? At what point is it DROSed, when it is received by the FFL prior to a build?

I know this may be a newb question, but I've wondered so I figured I'd ask.

The lower is what is registered, and yes it has to have a serial number. That has to be DROS'ed through a FFL holder/dealer when you buy it or have it shipped to your FFL dealer. If it doesnt have a serial number, you dont want it.

Thanks, but I was asking because I'm setting up an assembly line in my garage and intend to export to North Korea, Cuba, and parts of Africa.

There are plenty of people who do builds within the compliance. I was simply unclear about how the serial number aspect is handled.

If you are bending your own flats or working on 80% receivers the numbers are not required.

They are nice to have though in case of theft for identification of your firearms, or if a new AW Ban comes so they can get on paper.

Nodakspud receivers are numbered and can only be shipped to an FFL.

The ("lower receiver" for an AR-15 style rifle, "receiver" for an AK style rifle) is the serialized portion of the firearm, and the part which must be transferred through an FFL.

The DROS takes place when you purchase the receiver or rifle and complete the 4473 (Federal paperwork).

Longguns do NOT need to be registered, and DROS is NOT registration.

So nodakspud stuff would need to be numbered, correct?

Nodak Spud receivers are completed firearms, and must be transfered through an FFL. Since they are firearm receivers treated the same as complete firearms, basically) they must be serialized.

So-called "80% frames" are NOT firearms and not serialized. If you build one as a rifle in California, you do not need to serialize it, but it would assist in identification should it ever be stolen. If you build a pistol from a non-firearm receiver, then it needs to be serialized and registered with CA DOJ.
