    10mm ammo

Looking to get my feet wet with my g20 and trying to find some decent mid power stuff. Here's what I've found so far:

Sig 180 gr FMJ for range. Hornady Critical Duty 175 gr, Sig Elite V Crown 180gr and Hornady 180 gr XTP Custom. I'm thinking about dropping the Hornady Critical Duty and possibly the Sig V Crown and focusing more on the Hornady XTP Custom. Getting a package deal through a big online retailer with decent discount so I'm really focused on these for now.

Order Up some Underood . Probably the best there is beside reloading yourself .They often have decent coupons and sales if you get on the list . I'm not sure price wise what comparable ammo to what op listed but I was looking when I got into 10mm Underwood was slightly cheaper even with shipping .

I was going to go through my initial experiences WAY back when.
But this article somewhat covered it in a relatively accurate manner.

Initial weapon choices(back in the day):

Bren ten: Jeff Cooper's choice - But you had a real hard time getting mags
Smith 1006: great gun but very big package with the 5" bbl
Smith 1066: my choice great gun with the 4.25 bbl
Smith 1076: FBI forced Smith to place a de-cocker on it and the design was flawed and delicate.

        Ammo choices
Virtually none - Norma loaded it to it full capacity of 200 grn bullet traveling at about 1250 fps - or close to a .41 Mag. Great load and the FBI choice until the complaints came in from the rank and file of too much recoil.

Ammo manufacturers started loading it at 180 grn and 950 fps to quell the recoil complaints. If the above looks familiar, it should they essentially loaded it down to a 40 cal. So that gave rise to the .40 smith and Wesson wihich of course is a cut down 10mm so they could get it into a smaller framed weapon.

So my 2 cents if get your 180 grn at 950 fps for your practice and get (if you can find them) the 200 grn's at 1250. That a great load, but if you shoot that a lot - keep extra recoil spring around

If it's plinking ammo, you'll be best off with the Sig FMJ, as you'll get more for your money. Of the ammo you've listed the Sig FMJ is the only 'range' ammo, everything is more or less defensive ammo. Of the defensive ammo you've chosen the Critical Duty is less favorably reviewed in gel tests (for 10mm specifically), the Sig does well, and the XTPs are the same old reliable bullet they have been exhibiting okay expansion and good penetration.

So, if I'm understanding what you're asking, get the Sig FMJ and call it a day. How much defensive ammo do you really need vs. how much practice ammo do you need?

Sig is OK. Hornady is not great in 10mm form. Go Underwood for good stuff even though they backed off the juice a bit for the Elite. I load my own which is the way to go. G20 G40.

Got a Glock G20 love it. Not a good gun for the novice but if you shoot often it a tack driving machine. Shoots 2" groups all day long at 20yrds off hand.

By the time anyone interested reads this, I will have already placed my order for the fmj and some xtp's. Just getting feet wet, blah blah blah.

Now let's talk full power. Underwood seems to be the most that pops up and very wide selection. Sounds good. What about the other 3 or so companies that offer similar claims?

Also, should I invest in a heavier guide rod - spring setup? Or anything else for that matter?

Of Underwood, Double Tap, Buffalo Bore and Swamp Fox:
Swamp Fox: passed away, no more ammo
Buffalo Bore: pricey full power ammo
Double Tap: pricey full power ammo that doesn't reach claimed velocities, not because the ammo is underpowered but because the claims are 'impressive'.
Underwood: not so pricey full power ammo that has, very recently, had it's velocities reduced by 50 fps or so to support having a single line of ammo for both the Delta Elites and all of the real 10mms.

As for the guide rod and spring set up, if you find that your slide is battering your frame or that you're smiling your brass then yes, get a strong spring.

Otherwise, there's no real reason to other than something Buffalo Bore states, to paraphrase: "weak springs allow the slide to start opening before peak pressure which can lead to erratic velocities. To get more consistent velocities use a heavier spring". So if you chrono your full power ammo and see high SD and ES numbers that could be a reason.

I'm tempted (and probably will) to buy an adjustable spring kit just to test the velocity spread. Any consensus on the brand? I just don't want to be running an inefficient setup when I know I can bump the weight up a pound or two and get the most out of my ammo without sacrificing reliability. It's like buying a OEM minus connector. Why not when it's 100% proven to work.

Definitely recommend Underwood for the full power loads at a reasonable price.
