I wear my tin foil hat, you can get the good stuff at your local supermarket.

Im just kidding, lots of manufacturers of good quality tactical gear, try blackhawk industries stuff. Its really a choice of the wearer, vest or chest rig. Go with what is comfortable, train with it so you are used to it, doesnt do any good if you just save it for SHTF, gotta know how to work with the gear you plan on using.

Make sure to walk, sleep, move for a day every now and then in what you get. You gotta be used to it, and it get worn out to fit you better. What I really hated back in the day is getting new armor.

It would have to be really something to warrant a chest rig. But I think I did see a Korean shopowner with a quasi-tactical vest during the LA riots.

My "Mad Max" setup is a 3A vest under an Esstac BOAR. $$$

In a serious situation, if there is a riot, a chest rig should be the least of your worries. To buy one for fun is cool but seriously, in case of a riot, if your wading into battle shouting forth your battle cry of "spoon!", your probably in a dream. In a riot, you can more than likely excape the mayhem less your one of those Korean shop owners that were defending their shops.
Now if you want a chest rig for zombies...

I remember that as a little kid. I wad like, "oooooh. hey dad can we get one of those." Of coarse his response all the way till 2001 was, "why would we even need one of those AKs or AR15s?" then at about 2002 it was, "we should of bought an ar or an ak..."
Those dudes were great defending their shops and at the time, I dont think LEO did anything to them.
Of course not that LAPD did much during the riots but who could blame them? People want to burn their own hoods down? Effin let em.

Best advise I have on SHTF is to be up wind.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I decided not to go the chest rig/vest route, as I wanted something a little more multipurpose.
I took an after market adjustable 10 pocket Garand belt from Sportsman's Guide, and split it into left and right sections. I added a pistol belt to each half, making a one belt for a lefty(my son) and one for me. Then I put on an Alice suspender harness.
Each pocket(there are 5) will hold 1 8 rd Garand en bloc, or 1 15-rd M1 Carbine mag, or 2 5-rd strippers in 308, 8mm, or 30-06. I can also clip on the front of the pistol belt section a 30-rd M16 mag pouch, which will hold 3 20-rd M14/M1A mag(very tight fit), or 7 15-rd M1 Carbine mags, or about 10 8-rd en blocs.
The pistol belt section will also carry a pistol, mag pouch, knife and other stuff.
