Could a pistol remain submerged in motor oil indefinitely with no ill effect?

If it doesn't have wood, platic, or paint I don't see what could go wrong. Provided it is cleaned and properly lubed 100% after storage.

Yeah it might jack up some not metal parts like sights (night sights or fibers), and of course plastic and woods, but the metal should be fine. My gun lube of choice is and has been 10w-40.

300ml of Moly is just as good as oil, according to what I've read on calguns.

just remember that oil floats... so any moisture ie water will collect under the oil...

so the gun and the moisture will be at the bottom of the barrel....

Based on what I've read here, sticking it in a can of Crisco should also be gtg.

Traditionally, Rig Grease seems the best for long term storage.
