Situation with inherited rifle

My father owned 2 rifles, both are marlin .22's

He passed away 5 years ago and since then I purchased My own mosin nagant rifle

the problem I have is that my mother told me that one of the rifles is unregistered and was given as a gift to my father in the early 90's

what can I do to have it registered or transferred to me??

Do I have to worry about taking it to the range? the registered (store bought) rifle is a semi auto 22lr and the unregistered rifle is a bolt action 22magnum and I really want to take the bolt action to the range but do not want to get arrested

Rifles aren't registered in CA. You can take possession of them, since they belonged to a parent.

The transfer to your father in the early 90's may have been illegal, but that's not your problem.

Transfer from mother to son is paperless for an otherwise legal (not AW, SBR, .50BMG, etc..) rifle (or shotgun). Just go over, pick it up, and bring it home, as long as she also lives in CA.

You're fine taking possesion of the rifles from your Mom. Some people who are paranoid and want to "keep a record" will DROS a rifle to themselves in a situation like this but it isn't required or needed, it's just peace of mind for some.

No registration required. Just take them and use them for lawful purposes.

I changed the title of this thread to "Situation with inherited rifle" since "unregistered" sort of implies an AW, of which these clearly are not.
