    Handgun Registration Question

So I turned in my renewal application for my CCW yesterday. I added one new gun--a P229 in .40, and on the next line I added the same gun and serial, but with .357 SIG as the caliber. The gun was purchased as .40. I want to be able to carry both calibers, however.

So I get a call from the PD CSO asking for clarification. I explain about swapping barrels and wanting to carry both calibers. She says ok, but that she thought I made a mistake as she sees a P239 in .357 SIG that I sold a few years ago, and thought I maybe meant that one.

I knew that they had a record of all handguns that I own due to registration. I was surprised that they also keep a record of guns previously owned and sold.

Anyone have any info/insight to this? I was definitely caught off guard by this.

    Thanks,

    bblr

Once its in your name it never leaves your file.... even if you sell it
Its their way of keeping track of the firearm history.

So far as we have been able to determine, AFS - DOJ's Automated Firearms System - never deletes a record.

The entire history of a weapon's transfers, presuming DROS is used where appropriate, remains available. Similarly, the entire history of an individual's transactions - presuming DROS etc - remains available.

Was the sold gun on your permit?

I'm surprised dual calibers was allowed. My IA doesn't allow that. The gun has to remain in the original factory caliber.

I thought DROS records were supposed to be destroyed by the DOJ?

                Pre-registration records were.

Pre-2014 long gun records were never recorded much; DROS has been kept for handguns since 1924, never deleted.
