    HD shotgun

I want to get a really small shotgun for HD purposes. I was thinking about getting a youth sized semi and loading slugs and buck in there. What would a good option be?

I'd go with the 18.5" barrel on the Mossberg 500 (or Remington 870), and then throw a Hogue 12" LOP stock on it.

I did this on my 20" barrel persuader and it made it a little more maneuverable, but I preferred to use a limb saver pad on it when playing because the recoil was intensified significantly with the short stock.

    Is semi-auto a requirement?

I had the 870 with the Blackhawk spec ops 2 stock and the 18.5 inch barrel. But I want something smaller. Without going stockless.

I was just posting the links as an example. I'm sure you can find other sellers that will ship to Ca or order from your LGS once you decide what you want

Maybe a good time to search the pawn shops for an older 1100 or maybe a 1148 model. I had a 1148 20ga that I hunted with when I was a kid. Just like my mid 80's 1100, I've never had a failure with my Rem shotguns.

Off topic a little, just an ammo bump

Check this ammo out for the new HD shotgun when you have a chance.

Federal Number 1 Buckshot with Flite-Control Wad was listed in the deals section last year. I had already tried this ammo in 00 buck and was very impressed. This stuff in #1 buck shot is even more impressive.

For years, those of us that are interested have known that 00 buckshot was the "best available" load for most shooters for defensive purposes. Federal's 00 buckshot load in their great FCW (Flight Control Wad) was the "best of the best", as the FCW would hold the buckshot in the tightest...

The left side is the #1 buck at 23 yards.

Did that with my VC 590 It is very nimble and my #1 HD weapon.
Which is kinda ironic because I really like autos.

What do you mean by "really small"? Do you mean short overall length, light weight or both?

Shortest youth 20ga seems sound. I'd just go pump.

Flightcontrol is awesome stuff, it really works. Problem is, it defeats the purpose of a shotgun when you're under 15 yards. Great for hunting or farm use.

A 12 ga pump is pretty much the standard, although a 20 will also do the job . The Remington 870 and Mossberg 500/590 series are widely used/recommended. Used models for both are pretty easily found and usually at a decent price. If you've got the money and want a semi, then a Benelli M4 is awesome.

But your choice depends upon many factors:
What is your experience with shotguns?
What do you mean by small? Small LOP, overall length or caliber?
What is the environment you will be using it in?
Will others in your family be using it?
Is there a better tool for your intended use?

I could go on and we haven't touched on over-penetration possibilities. Shotgun World's forum may be a good place for you to drop by and look around.

Standard Remington 870 express should be good to go...
I have seen small frame female handling it just fine with standard stock.
