    My Colt combat Commander

Hi everyone. I recently purchased an older Colt 1911 combat commander mk iv series 80 pistol. It is in pretty good shape. Has an upgraded trigger and I also have the original trigger. It has a shiny blue slide that I have never seen before. It came in the old ColtFactory maroon colored box with styrofoam case. Does anyone have any info on this pistol or thoughts? Wasn't sure of the year so I called Colt and they seemed to think it was a 1972 but didn't seem sure. The serial number is not found on their website. There is also not a 70 before the serial number which Colt customer service was surprised when I told him that.

Also those are not original grips.

Anyways, again any info into this gun would be much appreciated. Thanks

And in all fairness, just because JMB did it doesn't mean anything. He'd have won WWII with a soup can, a fork, and a couple rocks. Seriously, even McGuyver and Steven Hawking get together every now and then and are like "How the **** did he do that?..."

If it was made in '72 it is a series 70, not a series 80.

Box is from an 80 series, definitely not a 70 series. Rollmarks also appear to be 80 series, also by the lipped edge of the stampings.

Everything looks right for a series 80 IIRC. They came out in the 80s.

Yeah I know, it says series 80 mk iv on the slide . I thought they didn't make the combat commander in a series 70. I was initially thinking it was an 80s early 90s but that's when I called Colt and they stated it was a 72.
                Anyone got anything else?

                  I concur.

The wiki article can give you some more general info on Commanders. The Combat Commander was introduced in 1970. Your slide looks like a typical Colt slide to me. Don't understand the "70 before the serial number" thing. My lightweight version was purchased in the '80's and it's serial starts with FL.

ETA: About the "70 before the serial number" comment by a Colt rep, I have a reference that shows full size Govt. Models made between mid 1970 and mid 1976 had serials that started with 70, e.g. 1972: 70G18001 - 70G34400, so probably a miscommunication.

If you're wondering if you got a Frankenstein Series 80 slide on a Series 70 frame, field stripping it should reveal the firing pin safety. Or not.

Good call but I'm thinking Colt gave the OP bad info rather than a Frankengun.

                        Why not both?

Thanks guys. It is definitely aseries 80. I called Colt back and was told it was a 1987. Makes more sense . I think he may have heard the serial number wrong the first time.

You should be able to tell by the slide. If it is a series 80, it should have the plunger for the firing pin block on the bottom of the slide. Series 70 should have nothing.
