How does consignment work at a gun store?

So I was in a gun store and they happened to have a cobray m11 with a ball bearing mag release. The m11 was on consignment with a price tag of 1250 plus dros. I researched on calguns market place and on the inter webs,it's about 400$-600$ over priced. So how does consignment work if I want to offer a lower price?

The owner usually sets the price they want and the shop gets a percentage of that. You can make offers, which the shop will relay to the owner.
It's up to the owner to accept or reject the offer

They told me the gun was on consignment but the gun store paid for the gun by offering in store credit?

It sounds like they "bought" the gun without actually buying it. They gave him what they wanted to pay and anything over that is profit for the shop. So chip away at the price.

I just bought a Beretta 686 on consignment. I originally offered less than the list price and they called the "owner" while I was waiting to run the price by him. At least I think they called him, they might have faked me out since I didn't get to speak directly to the seller.

The gun store signed all of the paperwork on behalf of the owner so I don't know how that part works.

They told me 2-3 different stories That the gun was a consignment gun, then it changed to it was there gun then when I called it changed again. I called the shop and offered 750-800. They said they were firm at 1250 because it was rare.

Thats really high for a brick with a magwell. I wouldnt go for that at all. Every so often keep shooting them a low offer over the phone as a different person. Maybe they will realize that its not worth what they want LOL.

They didn't call the owner of said firearm. From my experiences with the shop they seem deceptive and misleading on purpose.

it has to be on consignment. those are off-roster handguns so they can't be inventory guns. those guns are in a private-person's name and will be PPTed to the buyer.

a seller can say "I want $500 for my XYZ" and the gun shop can list it for $600 and collect their 20% if it sells, or try to get more for it. if the shop thinks they can get $700, they could discount it to someone for $650 or $600 and still be able to get the seller at least the $500 he wanted.

the seller already fills out his part of the PPT paperwork when the gun is dropped off, so the shop can just finalize a deal and then submit a PPT DROS to the buyer.

That extra $400 to $600 is the shops consignment fee. The owner has told the shop what his rock bottom and asking prices are, then the shop adds their fee to that. Any discount comes out of the shops profit. If they have room they could probably careless if it sells. Having oddball consignment stuff may actually generate traffic in the store.
