PPT Issue and DOJ Form BOF4542A

During my recent CCW renewal the local sheriffs department contacted me informing me that one of the handguns on my applications is not registered to me. We confirmed the serial # and they confirmed its not pulling up registered in my name. This handgun has been on my permit for nearly 2 years now, but according to the sheriff they only recently started vetting the registration They advised I contact the DOJ via form BOF4542A to straighten things out.

I purchased the firearm from a forum member back in July 2013. It was a straight forward PPT done at Martin B Redding. I contacted the FFL to see if they could shed any light on this, but they seemed pretty nonchalant about it. They said perhaps they or the DOJ screwed something up and that I should contact DOJ and report back to the FFL once I figure out what the mix up is.
Unfortunately looking through my safe I cant seem to find any of the transfer paperwork.

Ive now completed the DOJ form and will be mailing it out tomorrow. Im going to PM the seller but it looks like he hasnt been active for nearly a year.

Anyone else been in this type of situation? Is this kind of mix up pretty common? Any advice?

    TIA

Do the personal firearms record report, and see what comes back. Perhaps it is a transposed serial number. Do you happen to have a copy of the original DROS?

The Sheriff should already have your AFS report - did they look for any similar model of firearm on the report?

If the firearm is not on the report at all, even with incorrect serial number - then I would send in the volreg form.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion.

Sadly I found every DROS ive done except for this one. I wasnt aware of an AFS report and the sheriff didnt provide any details or offer up any information regarding similar makes/models on my AFS.

I think ill call the Sheriffs office in the morning to see if they can provide any details from my AFS and see if there are any similar models or SN#s resembling this firearm. Next follow your suggestions about the AFS and ultimately volreg.

My renewal will be processed in a few weeks at the latest, hopefully this is all squared away by then.

      Thanks again Skyhawk

Update: I was able to get additional information from the Sheriffs office. Looks like we have an error in one of the characters in the serial number. Confirmed with the FFL the DROS was done correctly, which leaves only the DOJ for the error.

Will attempt to contact DOJ in the morning to figure out what the next step is.

The FFL is legally required to provide you with a copy of the DROS upon request. They are allowed to charge a small fee since you lost the original.

If you have trouble reaching the DOJ by phone (it can be nearly impossible) try the email contact form at the bottom of this page. I have found that they will call you back pretty quick (within a day or so) if you use this form

Interesting problem. A 2013 DROS submission should have gone via the DROS on-line application. If the data on the DROS copy the dealer has is correct, no good reason DOJ records should be off.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Stopped by the FFL yesterday, they printed me a copy of the DROS at no charge. SN matches the firearm.

Didnt see your post until after I tried calling earlier today. Its an endless loop of automated prompts. Completed the lower section of that page providing as much detail as possible. If I dont hear back soon ill be sending them certified mail explaining the issue with a copy of the DROS.

Not sure what happened then. I dont have a copy of my own personal firearms report, just going off what the Sheriff read off to me via our phone conversation. He confirmed I have this make/model firearm registered to me with the serial number off by one character. The actual SN for the firearm has an "X" as one of the characters (DROS matches this), but the Sheriff confirmed the DOJ records has a "K" instead.

Was also able to contact the seller just making him aware of whats going on in case DOJ contacts him to confirm any information.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.Keep you guys posted.
