Guessing "Ignorant in a Smart Zone" hasn't been codified there yet.
He definitely needed to be charged with something, but I don't know if two felonies are appropriate. Just needs something to get him pay more attention to proper behavior in the future.

Every one is so eager to make felons out of ordinary albeit not very smart people and/or put people in jail these days. Yes, the man ain't too bright in doing what he did but no harm was done. The gun did not discharge and no one was shot.
Perhaps he watches too many cowboy movies. A stiff warning is in order but feeding the for profit prison system and taking the already over worked courts' time for every little thing is not the best way of doing things.
