    BWAHAHAHA!!! Ammo prices are insane!!

So I went to a shop to be unmentioned, and after being ignored while they shot the crap with some guy for a while, I asked what 25 boxes of AE .223 would cost me. I almost laughed out loud when he said $230!!! I said no way..I'd do 140 tops and walked out. This same shop had a well used yugo sks for around $350. Had a mosin carbine for around 300 too. I remember I bought my yugo unused for 110 OTD back home. I know stuff is more expensive here, but I can't believe this place is still in business!!!

I then proceeded across the street to big 5, which usually doesn't have very good prices either. I asked nicely if they could give a discount if I bought all their .223 UMC. They gave me 10% off and I walked out with 23 boxes. Great customer service!!

What killed me was that the guy at the first shop told me he had to charge that much because shipping is so expensive!!!

300 for a Mosin Nagant? Thats there tops the largest price I've ever seen a Mosin Nagant, and I've seen high, I guess someone is trying to cash in on the "Enemy At the Gates" excitment which died about 5 years ago.

Mosin prices vary a lot... You can always get standard generic Big 5 good-very good Russian for under $100... I sold my dead mint unissued Polish M44 and Hungarians for $300, my Type 53 Chineese for $350, my M38 1915 hex receiver for $399 and kept my Russian East German marked M44. If I were to sell that, I wouldn't take under $500.

If you think those prices are insane, try finding a three line, dragoon, or original New England Westinghouse Mosin in 80% or better original condition, and you'll be throwing close to $1000 for a excellent to minty " Mosin Nagant ".

I have a russian 1954 Izhmash SKS in unissued 100% original condition on lay-a-way at SJGE for $600. Two others as nice as it sold for $650, and didn't last a week. The mint Tulas I had that came in from the same collector sold for $599 and $549 and lasted about two weeks. I priced them, and yes, that's what I'm going to pay for it, because it's worth every cent of that.

Yeah, but AE .223 is AE .223.

"Shipping" is no excuse in that matter. All I hear is "support the local guys", but a lot of the time the small local guys don't think twice about raping you, and smirking because you didn't enjoy the experience!

I just checked my AE .223 prices. After shipping, 25 boxes would cost me roughly $150. So to make people happy, I should sell it for $140?

You can pay $150-$200 for a pair of boots or shoes that costs $10 to make and be happy with it, but if a gun dealer makes 20% profit, he's a theif? lol

              Hey Bill,
I share your excitement... Since I started re-loading, I have not touched my 2000 rounds of XM193. Will save it for rainy days...

                Thats better than found money!

Heck, at Reed's sale AE 223 was $95/500 and I was just quoted $129 at another local shop on Friday

That $230 is way out of line

Outdoor Marksmens mart has Federal AE ammo, if you buy it by the 1000 (50 boxes of 20) for 3.99 a box and then add shipping which to California from Oregon will probably be about $25. s0 call it $224/1000. They actually have Wolf ammo for $155/1000 then add your $25 shipping, so ~175/1000.

Wow...you should look into a new supplier then. my last order came in for that price. I understand dealers need to make a profit, but how is 20% profit derived by selling something that costs 150 for 230? I see that as a 100% wallet rape.

these guys are insanley high on prices for everything. Even the can of CLP I started to pick up there was $4 more than across the street.

Do you go to buy a car and pay the asking price so you can sleep better at night knowing that the saleman will be able to pay for one more semester of their kids college? Hell no! 223 maybe hard to find, but I can look a little harder than settling for his prices. I remember a coworker telling me they went in there for 7.62x39 back when you could buy wolf's for 2.99 a box anywhere...They were charging $5+!!!!

The SKS was a yugo 59/66 beat to hell. I find better ones for a third that price! The shop is terrible, and I was impressed that big 5 had a somewhat decent price.

I just can't belive these guys are still in business.

Ammo prices are being driven up by the cost of the raw materiels. Ammo resellers cannot afford to sell ammo for less than the components are worth as scrap. New manufacture ammo has to contend with skyrocketing brass prices.

Depending on where my ammo comes from it costs anywhere from nothing to 30 bucks a case to ship. I regularly pay 18 dollars to recieve a 35 dollar case of shotgun ammo. Makes it tough to sell for 3.99 a box.

Rare Mosins indeed! I wish I could get my hands on some of those... Then again, maybe not. I like shooting what I've got. Don't know if I could stand the temptation.

If it was a plain old Russian re-arsenaled, it's not worth more than $125 or so... I'd love to know what the markings were on it, without knowing that, we can't tell if it was a rip-off or not.

Don't worry, within ten years from now even airsoft will be regulated and all the gun stores will be outlawed or shut down by DOJ/ATF. Would that make you happier?

Many times, as a gun shop, we don't have the luxury of shopping around for the best prices, we go through our normal distribution chain and order stock when we need to. We also aren't there for bulk orders, as obviously, you can do that online or over the phone and get ammo direct for cheaper than we can. We just have ammo for the guy that needs to stop in for a couple of boxes, and sure we make generally $2-3 on a box of ammo we sell. We're a retail store, and we offer great prices when we can, but we're also limited by how much we have to pay for stuff...

And, when anyone asks me about bulk, I just tell them to buy it from AIM or somewhere.
