My folks don't like guns. I plan to store my rifle in a nylon case in a hidden compartment in my workbench. The workbench is in a sheet metal shed (about 23' by 10'). How much of an effect will the climate (I live in San Diego) have on my rifle. I plan to shoot it on a weekly basis.

Rifle storage and climate question

Nylon cases tend to trap moisture. Depending on how close you are to the ocean, it could be a moisture magnet.
If that's how you must store it, get a silicone impregnated gun sock. A small safe with dehumidifier is your best option.

Possibly in a year and a half. Still in school thanks to my dad's military benefits only caveat is that I have to earn less than 11k which is obviously not enough to survive on my own. Going through school w/o any debt is a pretty good deal.
I'm keeping the rifle at my friend's house at the moment but honestly I don't wanna do that for a year and half as I feel like coming in and out every week to get my rifle to shoot would annoy his folks.Comment

Quite simply, check on your rifle on a weekly basis. Wipe it down with some CLP etc now & then, don't let it rust. I tend to disagree with storing in cases, or having a gun where people don't want it. Just maintain it & don't let it rust. Don't overthink it.Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!Comment

Alright thanks for the tips. I didn't know about silicone-impregnated gun socks which I'll probably buy. I tend to overthink a lot of things (which more often than not don't work out XP). I don't like doing this either after all it's my parent's house and I should respect their wishes but... yeah I'm still kind of grappling with that in all honesty. It was a grueling 8 months waiting to buy the thing. I can't imagine how it would've been waiting until Fall 2017 (if I get a teaching job).Comment

I kept a rifle is a soft case(nylon) for a few months and it rusted. Use a silicone treated gun sock.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
