Camping in Yosemite with Firearms

Going to heading to Yosemite for the weekend sometime in May and went on the website to see the rules for firearms and such. It was interesting and wanted to see if you calgunners have experience with this or insight on the items in bold. This was directly from nps.gov for Yosemite.

So, I can legally bring a gun, but I cannot discharge it? What if I need to defend myself against 2 or 4 legged things?

The pepperspray caught me off guard because if I am camping, it would make sense to have that with us...but I guess not

It is the responsibility of visitors to understand and comply with all applicable state, local, and federal firearms laws before entering this park. As a starting point, visit the California Attorney General's website.
Federal law also prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park; those places are marked with signs at all public entrances.
Discharging a firearm for any reason is illegal.

Within Yosemite National Park, it is prohibited to possess or use pepper spray (including bear spray and other irritant gas devices), pellet guns, BB guns, bows and arrows, crossbows, blowguns, spearguns, hand-thrown spears, slingshots, explosive devices, or any other implements designed to discharge missiles."

To answer your question, you do what you need to do, and worse case, you are judged by a jury of 12.

As you travel around Yosemite, you will also note signs stating firearns not allowed. As I recall these are at the street entry to worker housing and also at the trail head to Nevada Falls.

Maybe they are worried about hot lead or casings starting a fire?

I was reading up on this as well. It's pretty confusing but what I understand is you can carry unloaded with mags on your person while hiking but can carry loaded in your campsite. Please correct me if this is wrong. Also read up on the strange deaths and disappearaces related to Yosemite

Instead of trying to interpret a bunch of text on the interwebs, just call them. They will give you an answer even if it's not what ur looking for but at least you'll have an answer. Don't underestimate the power of talking to a real person.

Actually, I often find the people on the phone to be full of ****. Read the printed laws.

True but at least you'll know what to expect right or wrong. You could always talk to them and ask why they don't follow printed laws.

I saw a kid die at Yosemite. On the trail to Victoria falls or whatever. He fell like 3 feet off of a rock. He was seizing or in shock or whatever. Then the medics came running up the trail extremely quickly. They put him in a wheelbarrow type device and medivacked him from the top of the trail near the waterfall. Crazy thing to see.

Keep a low profile. I saw some guys get rousted for guns in the Sunnyside parking lot, it wasn't pretty.

The only creatures you need to worry about there are the two legged types, and I don't mean Sasquach.

Wow, good to know. I had been bringing my hellfire and sidewinders with me since I bought them on Craigslist a few years ago. Is an RPG considered a missile? Maybe that's OK since I didn't see anything specifically calling out rocket propelled grenades.
