City of San Jose apartment inspections

I got a notice that the city of San Jose is going to inspect my apartment complex to make sure it complies with "housing occupancy codes". At first glance one would think it's to make sure there's running water, heat, etc. That would be absurd in this monstrous 1000 unit complex where 1 br units rent for $2500 a month. So the paranoid gun owner in me wonders if they're going to be looking for hi-cap magazines (I have many, all legally owned) or AW's or unsecured guns, etc.

Anyone hear of anything like this? Or is it just a ridiculous waste of (my) taxpayer money? Apartment management said they will inspect half of the units in this complex. It's supposed to take a week.

I went thru this a few years ago in city of LA. Basically it was a building inspector type person who walked around with the apt mgr and myself. he made sure smoke detectors were working and strongly recommened that the apt owner replace my old lousy kitchen floor. which was done. But made no comments on any of my stuff.

It's normal. I'm a landlord and we actually pay the housing department for the inspections. Inspections are done bi-annually, They are there to check that all is working correctly, hot and cold water, toilets flush, smoke/co2 alarms, fire extinguishers...

They are not there to check for guns, drugs or other contraband.

They're there to check the house to make sure the smoke detectors and stuff work. Just the same, police your house a bit and put everything away. You don't need to risk one of those "If it saves one child" types coming in and wrecking your day.

Okay, hope y'all are right. It's the first time in 23 years of living in this place that there's been a city inspection. There have been safety inspections for smoke detectors, etc but those have always been apartment maintenance employees.

Yeah, I did a quick stash of magazines, etc, but I'm in the process of moving, so everything is scattered.

This happens in my apartment building in the LA area routinely - they're checking for the state mandated stuff like fire sprinklers, smoke detectors, fire exits working and not blocked, etc.

Just hide the guns, even if they're under your mattress for a day.

Not sure what the concern is... Do you leave firearms related stuff just lying around? I'm not judging you or anything but my assumption is that most of the stuff I'd be worried about is usually locked up and hidden anyways.

$2500 for a one bedroom? That is nuts.

As a landlord, my unit has been inspected twice in 18 years. Inspections are not a yearly thing and in my case once every 9 years. The city where my unit is located in just wants to make sure that the tenant is not living in sub standard housing conditions. No conspiracy.

Don't worry; they are from the government. What could go wrong?

If you keep everything lock in a safe while they are there it won't be an issue. Out of sight, out of mind.

I think the concern is that the government is coming to enter one of the most private and sacred places a man has. America has traditionally been so averse to this kind of conduct (whatever the stated reason) that they listed such conduct as one of the listed items compelling them to declare independence from the king of England and start their own damned country.

First off, an apartment is not a castle. And the occupant certainly does not own it. Therefore inspections are part of the deal. Like it or not.

They are probably checking to see if the apartment owners have installed the CO detectors that became mandatory 3 or 4 years ago.

When we had the final walk through inspection by the County for our pool installation last year, the inspector told us that he was required by the State to check that we had at least one functioning CO detector in the house every time that they inspected a property for any other reason.

Try convincing the man who lives there.
