C'mon g-pa, kids are great...when they belong to someone else and you can kick them back into play when they get out of line.

    Sorry, not sorry.

I realized I left my 642 sitting in a desk drawer in my spare room the other day. I often off-load my wallet, keys, phone and EDC on that table and go to bed in the other bedroom. The only kids I have are the two dogs.

The next morning I was woken up early by the pest control guy. I totally forgot he was coming, and it happened to be a new employee I didn't recognize. He had free roam of the house and could have easily snatched up the 642 and I wouldn't have noticed until I got dressed to go out for the day. This is why you shouldn't leave stuff laying around.

Lock it up, kids or not.

I think you should lock them up even if there are no kids or visitors in the house. Why take unnecessary risks for the sake of a little bit of convenience?

No service people ever, that's what i do for a living i can build a house from ground up no subs needed. And the GSD keeps the place safe when i'm not here and as for guest not going to happen.

I'm 58 wife is 56 no kids at home both in their 30s and my 4 grand kids pretty much never come over (Grand pa is not kid friendly) so i don't bother locking it up and it is loaded at all times in my range bag supper easy to get at.
If the grand kids were to come over i would lock it up, am i legal or not.

Chuck, it depends on which city you live in. If you live in one of our premier socialist urban centers - you might be a criminal.

For a second, there, I thought you were going to tell me one of the dogs got it.

There are many ways to keep the pistol hidden, but accessible. Hollowed books, magnets mounted underneath table or other furniture. Leaving it out, IMHO, is asking for trouble.

It's not the day-to-day it's when something out of the ordinary happens. We here of more stories where something bad has happened with a loaded unattended firearm then I've heard of a firearm not being easily accessed.

Mine are on my hip or in my quick access safes around the house. I would never leave a loaded weapon out or in a range bag.

Too many weird things happen in life to take a chance like that.

Good luck Grandpa and dang it lock up that gun and get those kids over. Times a ticking my man!

The question is dealing with the legalities though, and the legality is that secured storage is not required if a minor would not REASONABLY have access.

Kids have a gas leak and the grandkids come over?
I don't have the keys to my parents' place.
My kids don't have the keys to mine.
Aside from the 1500 and 3000 mile distances involved.....

Legally, the "out of the ordinary" would not be considered "reasonably expected" any more than a burglary would be considered "reasonable access"

                        Smart? No. Legal? Yes.
It would suck to be shot by a burglar who found your gun.
But it would not be criminal on your part.
