    Getting into *long distance shooting*

So my rifle is in jail. Almost out. I have had the long time, building desire to get a fully capable *long distance shooting* rifle. A while back I bought a Remington 770 .30-06, which had a 3-9x40 scope. It was a synthetic stock. This thing kicked like no other! After 4 shots I was beaten and bruised. I guess I didn't clean it; and when I shot it again, the bullet lodged with the bolt (which often slipped clear out the rear when cycling!) So this time I was really getting a sniper rifle. I wanted long distance power, accuracy and precision, effective and reliable. So I got the .30-06 Remington 700 CDL. I then purchased the Nikon Prostaff 5, 3.5-14x50, plus a single piece mount/rings. First thing about this: the barrel is shaped and designed in such a way that a low mount can be configured, bringing the scope's line of sign closer to the barrel even with a 50mm objective scope . This baby is going to be nice. The maple wood stock will help with some recoil. I tell you one thing, it will be a heck of a lot better than that synthetic piece of crap on the 770! A defining feature of this gun, IMO, is the magazine-or lack thereof- design! This features no magazine. That means no magazine has to be carried! Also, that means on less part! Instead, it is a top fed system...you pull back the action and there is a spring, just as is inside of a standard box magazine. I really am excited about owning this type of configuration, as I've always had to stock magazines. The barrel is 24" long. It's copper steel. It's not a 'heavy barrel'. So I'm curious what the abilities of the barrel are. After how many continuous shots of .30-06 would it begin to deter the bullet? I digress. I am very interested in becoming skilled at sighting this rig. Ideally, I spot a target, at any range from point blank to, let's say 1000 yards, account for angle, ballistic drop, ballistic course, distance, width, weather, and hit the target on the first shot.

After about 3 shots at a non rushed pace your groups will start to spread. Nice gun though, have fun learning!

It sounds like you got yourself a nice little hunting setup, which is good because there isn't much difference in the shooting aspect between hunting and sniping. You will likely get wildly different opinions on just about everything, so just learn the basics and do what works best for you.

If a .30-06 is kicking your butt, your either a little guy or doing it wrong. I know a lot of little guys that do well with .30-06 and larger calibers, so I suspect you don't have the stock firmly placed on your shoulder.

You might do a little reading at www.snipercentral.com/ to get a more focused view on sniping/long range shooting.

If you were interested in a "sniper" rifle, why didn't you buy one?

          ^^^ What he said.
Most sniper rifles I have seen have a heavy and straight barrel some are fluted as well to lighten up the weight. Not sure what Copper Steel is or why anyone would use that for a gun barrel.
          Good luck in your endeavor.

Unless your joining the military or law enforcement, your not getting into snipping. Also a sniper's rifle is any rifle owned by a sniper.

Now you sound very excited and you want to get into the long range precision game, but you should have done a lot more research before making those rifle purchases.

Light contour "copper steel" barreled sniper rifle. Check.

Because most modern sniper rifles are too loud due to pushing calibers meant for hunting much larger bipedal game, so it makes it hard to sneak up on the snipe. Them snipes is smart - but delicious though; taste like chicken.

This is the first time I've ever seen someone excited to move away from a DBM to a blind mag configuration. Neat.

OP: if you have copper in your steel, I'd suggest a product like Butch's Bore Shine or KG products

                        "Sniping," huh?

I would choose a different caliber if you want to get time behind the trigger. 30.06 is not the greatest round to master the basics.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

The barrel will heat up and the bullet will wander by the 3rd shot.
If you want to shoot continously (more than 3-5 shots per hour), you want a HEAVY barrel.
Your skinny barrel is going to recoil just like your 770 did too...
