Here's a link for a blog done by a guy in Argentina. Their economy collapsed in 2001 and they are now a 3rd world country. Aside from getting a perspective, pay attention to the older post on 10/31/08. He gives some great insight on what you need and opinions on firearms.

Yep, saw that one before. Quite an interesting account, and good pointers. Everybody keeps talking about how to survive the first couple of weeks or months, but what about years? That's where his advice comes in.DiaHero Foundation - helping people manage diabetes. Sending diabetes supplies to Ukraine now, any help is appreciated.

these SHTF threads bother me, maybe im just not paranoid enough....what happened in argentina will not happen here it's like comparing apples and oranges....there will not be a total economic collapse...look i have my guns food storage etc....... but im not buying gold bars or stock piling ammo....Saving you from yourself one post at a timeComment

argentina was the poster child of the IMF and the US as to how to run a country....until it collapsed after following the rules. to think it can't happen here is i think a mistake.
movie zombie"The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound."-- as seen on a t-shirt

Well, it did happen here before. As for the gold bars and ammo, well, both have been going up since I started buying them. Even with the current drop in spot gold prices, it's still way up from my average. But then, my grandparents are from Russia, and one of them went through the siege of Leningrad. One of the lessons he learnt was that a golden ring or something similar could buy you a loaf of bread in the worst of conditions, and that loaf of bread could give you the few days of life until you can find some more food, and eventually survive.these SHTF threads bother me, maybe im just not paranoid enough....what happened in argentina will not happen here it's like comparing apples and oranges....there will not be a total economic collapse...look i have my guns food storage etc....... but im not buying gold bars or stock piling ammo....
People keep saying that things like this won't happen, but we've seen a lot of such "unthinkable" things happen recently. Post-Katrina New Orleans comes to mind.
A lot of people think that things like that only happen in the third world, and forget that we've been bringing the third world right into this country, both through complacency in letting the government expand its control over us (and abuse that control without retribution as a result, because it can) and unintegrated immigration. Here's an example, one of many:
So, call me paranoid, but I don't discount that Argentinian blogger's advice. Aside from everything else, preparing for it doesn't cost much and doesn't take that much time. If I never have to use it, great. If it comes to that his advice is relevant, I'll be 50% prepared or so (no preparation is 100%, or even 70%, there're just too many variables, especially when one doesn't want to spend his entire life preparing, which I don't. I just prepare enough to give myself enough time to assess the situation and adjust to it).
Oh, and by the way, the ammo I bought even a couple of months ago is already sold for more than I paid for it, when it's even in stock. And the thing with ammo is, if I don't need the stockpile, I'll just eventually use it up and have a good time

Looking even longer term: If you don't need it, who's to say your children or your children's children wouldn't use it?

Look I believe in being prepared, I have food storage, and I reload I have plenty of bullets, primers, brass and powder. The USA is no were near a total collapse. I'm not saying don't be prepared it just seems that there is a lot of preoccupation with it and a lot of talk about gloom and doom.....but I guess everyone needs a hobby.....Saving you from yourself one post at a timeComment

That's what I was told 3 years ago when I tried to talk a few friends of mine out of buying condos/houses. I was told that when I pulled out of the stock market in March, and when I was saying that the economy wasn't strong, it was just masked by the real estate prices going up (that was 3-4 years ago). I can elaborate on the reasoning that led me to this back then, but the point is, people tend to ignore the warning signs because it interferes with their wishful thinking. So, we'll see where this will be going. I have a list of what I expect to happen over the next 10-20 years, if anyone's interested
