Hello, I am new. few questions

    Hello Everybody.

My name is Jon Steel, I live in Roseville, PRK (north of Sacramento).

I am going to purchase my first firearm soon (possibly a Kel-Tec Su-16CA or A).

First off i was wondering, Are there any CA legal off the shelf rifles with a detachable magazine that uses .223 or larger rounds...or at least somwhere that i can find wich ones are. (the kel-tec and the Ruger Mini-14/30's are the only ones ive found).

2nd. My father is a retired police officer, Was SWAT, NARC, ect. With him being retired does he still have any abilitys to accuire fire arms or accesories that would otherwise be illegal in Ca? I know he was able to when on squad because he has a 15rd mag for his Sig 226.

    Thanks...Sorry if i sound Noobish

My dad rather get a pellet gun than a real gun, so he hasnt been informative.

Some of the Critters both animal and human Would laugh in the face of .223. I would go for the short .308. Or better yet just an old Mauser M-48 in 8MM would do fine.

sounds like the keltec, get the CA, would be a viable option for your purposes.

                Welcome!

The Kel-Tec Su-16CA is a nice little rifle. It's light to backpack too. I'd recommend an M1A if it wasn't a bit heavy to lug around backpacking.

There are a few other choices. I'm sure people will post recommendations here soon.

I don't know what your experience is with firearms ( you may have friends that own firearms and have some experience shooting theirs) BUT I would suggest as a first time rifle a 10/22 its light, cheap to shoot, a good first weapon IMO.

Vector V-51 in 308. Roughly the form factor of an MP5 rifle-config (so it's uber short), and it fires 308.

Except, of course, it's a CA 'assault weapon' link
semi-auto, center fire, removable magazine, pistol grip, and it's an NFA weapon as well.

                          But pretty cool!

Au contrare. Bright Spot up in Riverside is selling them as rifles, with fixed stocks and fixed mags. Think they might have barrel extensions on 'em too. Just pop the trigger pack off, use a modded gripless housing, and think of the fun and games.

But either way, in the config being sold here, they're as legal as my PTR-91.

I'd bet he said pellet gun for the following reasons.

I've got to go with ohsmily and SemiAutoSam on this one. A 10/22 or even a bolt action .22 is the way to go. I actually like the bolt gun(tube fed) better for new shooters, because it develops patience. I feel that having to manually cycle each round encourages shot placement, since you can't compensate with quick followup shots. There are less parts for a new guy to worry about, clean, lose, or damage. Cheap ammo makes for a lot of practice. You can shoot it at almost any indoor range. You don't have to worry about building a flinch like you might from a larger caliber. A standard .22lr is one of the least expensive firearms you can buy. I'd rather do all the silly things new people do to a rifle on a $100.00 rifle, than a $1000.00+ hunting setup. Overall, the .22 is a fine gun to hone those all-important skills.

It is better to be thinking about the safety rules, what is going on around you, and what you are doing with the firearm. Occupying your mind with the next operational step for a relatively complex firearm can be a distraction for some new shooters.

Skill level, and knowledge should be a major factor in deciding your first purchase. Let someone you trust who knows you and your abilities help you make that choice. Then by all means, get a rifle and join the crowd. We love to hear about people making their first gun purchase, let's us know the sport isn't dead. By the way, welcome to the forum.
                              .
