Call the BLM office that administers the land in the area you are looking to shoot and BBQ on.

Then have a good time shooting and preparing food.

Then pick up your trash. Pick up other people's trash.

Bee canyon used to be a spot to go out there, you need to check and be sure it's open. And yes please take out more trash then you brought. I was up at 1no9 trail on Monday and it was a mess out there, literally thousands of shotgun hulls and glass everywhere, pretty sad

No steel jacket or core bullets. The cases can be steel unless you get a retard that doesn't understand that.

Because people leaving trash is the biggest problem where I live. Or maybe you didn't see that first post. The second post was because he asked where do I usually go shoot which unfortunately isn't in his area. Oh but you know because your post is so informative and helpful to the OP.

I've looked online but got a tad confused. I'm pretty sure it will involve a healthy drive.

                          This is your BLM office

You're better off driving to kern county and playing in the lands administered by the Ridgecrest office.

Call one of both and ask them about popular areas to shoot.
If you decide to drive to Kern (or anywhere for that matter), be safe, be sure of your backstop, be sure you won't be shooting over trails that might have dirt bike riders on them.
