Transporting a handgun to Florida

I'm thinking about driving to Florida sometime soon, and I was wondering if it would be possible to take a handgun with me.

I don't have a CCW and I was going to rent a minivan or SUV, so I thought I could transport it in a locked box, with loaded mag in separate locked box.

There isn't anything against the law with this way of transporting firearm, mag, and ammo right?

Granted, it won't be easily accessible but better to have some sort of means to protect yourself than none right?

Here you can have the loaded mag in the same box as the gun (just not in the gun). Check the laws for each state you'll be driving through.

Can you get a Florida CCW as a California resident?

I just checked... I might apply for one later, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to get it in time for my road trip. I'll be leaving within 30 days...

I just got back from a road trip to Florida. I would never make a trip that far without a gun available. Yep, you'll be braking a lot of state laws without a CCW. But the crap that goes on now a days? Your choice. I think the only states the recognize California CCWs on the way to Florida are: Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi. Florida does not.

Get an Arizona CCW. It will cover you all the way to Florida once you leave California.

A very simple all by mail process. The averaged time from application to receiving it in the mail is around 4-5 weeks.

Some states allow a loaded firearm in plain view in your car. Check before you go. When I drove from CA to SD, I loaded my handgun and left it in the passenger seat as soon as I crossed the state line, and it was perfectly legal all the way there and back. Oklahoma doesn't allow it, and maybe Texas, but i believe LA allows a loaded handgun in plain sight. Some states consider your vehicle an extension of your home.

Please double check your information. The last time I checked, a great many States honor a California CCW, while California does not honor any other State CCW.

I think you are . I think the COncealed Carry magazine has a list of the States. It use to be that bordering States did not recognize Cal, but that's now changed.

Absolutely not. I know for a fact Utah, AZ, CO, and several others don't require a lock box as long as the firearm is in "plain view".

No, not at all. Where did you get that idea? Given that this is a gun forum, and many folks are interested in CCW, the information provided is a simple solution to both transporting a firearm cross county and have the ability to be legally armed if desired. Lot's of other ways to legally move a firearm from California to Florida.

gfz is one law. Interstate federal law ammo cannot be with firearm. Don't confuse with state law.Already discussed today.
