Taser gun

Is Taser gun legal in California? Do you need a permit to own one especially residing in San francisco? My buddy wants one to take with him when he go for a walk with his 14 month old son for protection.

I believe that they are legal but that is based solely on the fact that I was able to go through the shopping cart process for buying a taser online. And based on that, I also don't believe a permit is required as I don't remember reading any disclaimers on the seller's website.

However, I decided against it ($500 some odd bucks) as it was as much as a regular gun. I instead ordered UDAP Bear Mace. Mighty handy with them four legged critters and works like a charm on the two-legged variety as well.

When you purchase a new Taser there is a simple background check that must be completed and is at minimal cost. Once you pass then they provide you with the activation code. This is pertaining to the civilian models as I have no real knowledge of the LE models.

The one I was looking at was the LE model. It was in pistol form that shot the projectiles that had trailing wires that connected to the pistol and with which you could send additional shocks to the assailant. It was not the thing that looked like a cell phone that you have to be in close quarters with an assailant in order to use. Oh and the LE model came with a built in laser sight. It was 75-100 cheaper if you ordered one without the laser.

The X26C is the civilian version of the X26, which is the one commonly used by police.

There are other available models: the C2, which is the same as the X2C but in different packaging, and the M26, and the M18. The X26 is restricted to law enforcement by Taser International, though possible to find for a very hefty price.

If you were to choose one for defense, I'd pick an X26C or C2. The others have different voltages, currents, and pulse types, which make them less effective.

The C2 and X26C are legal to carry in California if you are a non-felon, since they are not firearms.

Does the C2 have exactly the same power and pulse as the X26C? It's around 1/3 the price and takes a smaller probe cartridge and battery.
