Modified my Kydex holster - great idea!

Well, went to town with the dremel tool just now. Need a (non-light) holster for my duty XD .40 tactical 5". So,I opened up thekydex holster made for my XD .40 subcompact. Works perfectly 2-in-1 holster now. Kydex holster makers make note of this.

Forgot to take the before photo - you all know already, it's enclosed/sealed off at end of the barrel.

You may want to open up the sight channel just a bit more to be safe. I'd heat up just that area and open it up just a tiny bit to ensure that the front sight can not snag on the holster.

IF you twist the firearm while drawing, can you get the front sight to hand up on the holster?

If drawing, will the front sight snag clothing and draw the clothing up into the holster?

Cannit even twist it, it's locked in and plenty of clearance for the front sight, I've opened up both inside and outside. The draw design is tilt forward: click in, click out, no hangup, or stuck to clothing. It's no different in function to oem SA XD holster or exposed leather holster. Smooth draw.

I thought about doing this to glock holsters.
will the muzzle touch your clothes and leave oily stains?

              You're over oiling your gun.

What was the end point of doing that?

I can use same kydex hoster for both the subcompact and full-size. No need to buy another one, too many already. Again, no snagging at all, plenty of clearance from the original form and just opening up on the bottom.

The holster should protect your front sight IMO...

The only thing I would caution is getting the gun bumped out of the holster slightly exposing the trigger, which is why holsters that have this open end design to fit models of different lengths usually cover more of the "longer" slide. You'd been much better suited using the smaller gun in the bigger holster.

The holster snap fit tightly the same. Now just allows for longer barrel. It does not come out unless I intentionally draw my weapon, same as before.

I like this more than factory XD holster which is bulkier over the belt and covers less.

Thanks for the words of caution. I hear you. The kydex holster fitment over the slide and trigger is exactly the same - snap in, snap out.. The only differences are the longer barrel and grip on the 5" vs. 3.5". I've been carrying it all day walking, driving, bending, etc., with zero issues. Draw and reholsterthe same. I wouldn't do if I didn't feel it was safe.

The factory SA XD holster fits from the sub to full size XD .40 all the same, and it exposes the front end even more so.
