One of my biggest problems is not being able to hold the rifle or handgun steady. I was thinking of just sitting in my chair and just practice so many times until I can be steady. Any ideas

Excercises to steady holding a firearm?

That's exactly it. Dry fire for a while before you dry fire, and then dry fire some more.Originally posted by cockedandglockedGetting called a DOJ shill has become a rite of passage around here. I've certainly been called that more than once - I've even seen Kes get called that. I haven't seen Red-O get called that yet, which is very suspicious to me, and means he's probably a DOJ shill. -
Go shoot your gun. Or lift some weights, if you can't hold a 3-14 pound object steady with two hands, it's time for some push upsOriginally posted by KestryllThis guy is a complete and total idiot.

Put an empty shell right at the muzzle and don't let it fall off, works well for Glocks, others not so much.

The quarter trick works well too. Balance a quarter on a handgun muzzled while doing dry fire exercises without it falling off.sigpicComment

Dry fire, shoot a bigger caliber would work unless you are Michael J. Fox.Comment

Yup. Strengthen all the muscles that control the shoulders, arms, and fingers. It doesn't matter how scary, ugly, uncomfortable, or inconvenient self defense can be. Like it or not, you will never, ever be relieved of your duty and responsibility to defend your life, your family, your country and your freedom.
How much ammo do I need? Enough to last me the rest of my life, and then lot more for later.

One thing I see a lot of folks having is shaky hands syndrome, whether from excitement, nervousness, or whatever. It was just an old plywood boat, with a '75 Johnson, with electric choke. A young boy, two hands on the wheel, I can't replace the way it made me feel.Comment

OP is rather vague. The assumption in the comments is weak muscles but is that truly the cause? Improper breathing, too tight a grip, and more can be causative or contributing factors. Even hydration can be the culprit.Comment

To strengthen your core, and shooting platform without any weights....
Daily-
Push ups
deep knee bends / squats
Chinese Push ups
Burpies
Pick a goal- say 10 of each and do them when you get up...
Increase the # of reaps each week....
Start where you can and increase with time....Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Way back when I was a young marksman I used to balance a dime on the end of a rifle barrel.Keep it simple!Comment

There are a number of articles on the net about how to hold a firearm (rifle or handgun). Very few shooters actually perform exercises but dry firing is the main one to focus on. You have to be smooth, don't jerk the trigger, and continue to focus on the front sight after the shot is taken. Hold the trigger back and wait for the sight to realign before slowly releasing the trigger just up to the point where it clicks (resets).
There's more, but these will let you know if you're jerking the trigger. Practice it enough to know what it's like because once you add live ammo it's easy to forget, which is where it helps to have someone load a snap cap for you (surprise test to see if you jerk the trigger after a few shots).Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon.Comment
